Great Sex for a Lifetime Vol. 1
The first volume of this 2008 Sinclair Institute production focuses on Advanced Sex Play and Positions. This DVD puts a spotlight on its target audience, the Baby Boomers, but the information that’s discussed also comes in handy for all long term couples. Whether you’re battling the blahs or dealing with issues surrounding a maturing body, this sensuous presentation will feel encouraging and uplifting.
What to Expect
What might have worked in the past may not be suitable for your current needs - it can be all too easy to fall into routines and bad habits. Research has revealed that improving your sex life may improve your relationship. Touting this as the ‘Boomer sexual revolution’, you can learn new and uncomplicated techniques that can improve your sexual activity and prevent sex from getting stale. The production encourages you to explore some new ideas and openly communicate what feels good to your partner.
Volume 1 begins with a discussion among a group of couples, diverse in age and body shape, who speak about topics surrounding their sexual relationships. The rest of the segments present sexual demonstrations by real couples who take to the stage. This is infused with sidebar and commentary by the discussion group, sexual educators and specialists.
The first segment, Sex Play, explores ways to build sensuality with your partner; the next section discusses how to reinvent Oral Sex. Sexual Positions comes afterwards and then proceeds to an examination of Orgasms and the G-Spot. Lifestyles is the final section – this focuses on the significance of a healthy lifestyle and its impact on a sexual relationship.
Presentation 9/10
Great Sex for a Lifetime intended to speak to the hearts of Baby Boomers, so what better way to do that than through real Boomers opening up about the changing dynamics of sex as they reach various stages in their lives? This was led by a professionally trained host, whose geniality and self-proclaimed Boomerism contributed positively to the show.
The method of presentation was engaging and sincere. The flow of the DVD went something like this; you watch a discussion about the chosen topic, which then transitions to an explicit demonstration by one of Sinclair Institute’s real life couples. All the while, the host or one of the other professionals occasionally comments on facts, techniques or ideas to consider.
The presentation was reassuring and gave a sense of camaraderie and fellowship. All of the demonstrating couples were attractive yet were diverse in age and sexual preferences; they also weren’t all twenty- something models and actors. That detail makes it much easier for a broad range of viewers to identify with the content; it also creates a sense of inclusion.
One of the really positive aspects of this show was that the demonstrating couples got a chance to discuss their thoughts on their evolving sexual relationships. A concept that Sinclair Institute clearly got across was that seduction needs to be worked on, despite the demands of everyday life.
Content Quality 6.5/10
The content was useful and applicable to individuals at all skills levels. Even if you’re an expert in the bedroom, you’re still vulnerable to a sexual slump from time to time. Watching this production can inspire you to reawaken your inner passion.
As you get older, you get to know what you want and how your body responds to certain stimulus. However, insecurities don’t go away, they’re just wrapped up in a different package. But it may actually get easier as we get older; Sinclair Institute indicates that women become more assertive and men more romantic.
Getting to know what you or your partner wants may just require a new approach. Be encouraging and ask questions about what feels good. Update the version of some of your go-to sex positions, kiss in different places, or wear something different to bed. It’s important to remember that our largest sex organ is our brain and we need to cater to and be enthusiastic about that.
My favorite line of the show was what the very handsome and distinguished Aussie gentleman said about keeping the spark alive, “Women, do something outrageous once a week - and to men, I say, allow yourselves to re-fall in love with the woman that you fell in love with and encourage her to be that woman, the essence of what you fell in love with. You’ll have the most amazing love life that you could ever wish for.”
Sex Appeal 7.5/10
The content of Great Sex for a Lifetime was fairly stimulating. There was so much intimacy and relaxedness between the couples in their lovemaking. I also realized the value of using people with varying body shapes, ages and sexual preferences.
Viewing erotic films contributes greatly to sexual awareness and personal growth. It’s an amazing means to enhance viewers’ identification with the information being shown. Even just the act of watching this video, particularly when it’s with a partner, is arousing ... it can also stir up some major sexual energy!
Video Quality 10/10
The video quality of this series was extremely impressive. It was put together very professionally and it was obvious that there was a lot of attention paid to details. The scenes transitioned well and the means they used to provide commentary while the couples were engaging sexually was excellent. It was particularly effective when the couples commented on themselves while they were being shown having sex.
Audio Quality 8/10
The music employed was very subtle; they made use of soft gentle sounds, solo instrumentals like saxophone, and some ethereal background melodies. At times it was barely audible such as when it was being played during the discussions; but it was audible enough and very effective.
Extra Features 10/10
Sinclair Institute showcased a number of highly appropriate topics that were interesting and to the point. There was a good amount of extra features, or rather, quickie lessons...
These featured a sex therapist, an MD who specializes in sexual dysfunction, as well as a sex, marriage and family counsellor. I really enjoyed their contributions to this production. The vignettes were an appropriate length, not too long, with a great burst of vital information.
The Behind the Scenes was my favorite part of the DVD – it showed our couples talking about the experience of having sex in front of a production crew of 40 people. It was light and comical. It made the production seem all the more genuine - a nice touch. I think it’s so valuable to have real couples demonstrating techniques because it helps viewers identify with them. It also makes you believe that it really is possible to achieve continuing success in the bedroom by being honest and heartfelt with your partner.
The extra features included a part called Discussing Menopause – what it is and how to deal with it. They also added a segment called Addressing Erectile Dysfunction (ED), which focused on lifestyle, ED drugs and the fears associated with this condition. The Better Sex Guide to Lubricants reviewed massage oils and compared water-based versus silicone lubricants – this part had a great explanation of why you shouldn’t use silicone lubricant with silicone toys. A section called Sexual Health Information was also included, providing additional resources about this topic.
Overall Score 8.5/10
Not belonging to the Boomer generation myself, I still enjoyed this production and the principles that they shared. Anyone can appreciate the message; when you’re experiencing a lag in your sexual relationship, focus on rekindling the spark - it is worthwhile to work on and can be incredibly rewarding. Think of it as an exciting opportunity for you and your partner to pay homage to what each of you fell in love with in the first place.
