Generally they can be done, according to the boxes 5 days before your period would normally begin. You can do it as early as 7 days before, anything earlier will be inaccurate, meaning it may give you a false negative.

Brandye answers the various questions on "chances of pregnancy" the deficit seems to be in the OP's not having a clear understanding of the various ways which semen come in contact with vaginal fluids. To exemplify; the big ones being "pre-cum" , leakage post anal, or after removing a condom. It would help to have a sticky to provide a link to these questions for posters to read, then they can re-focus a question and hopefully have a better grasp on all the various risks. It will also educate as to other methods which may have seemed safe; thus, preventing engaging in another high risk behavior. The questions are appearing almost daily and are nearly the same.
