There definitely is dominance and submission. Think about it biologically; in doggy, the female (or reciever) is completely exposed. Neck, organs, spine, there's no protection. They're at a complete disadvantage, and being submissive is in their best interests (not that they wouldn't be having fun, but I imagine some encounters would have been hostile).
This also ties in with why some guys can have a very hard time with mmf threesums and/or are very possessive, biologically guys don't want to share "their" women. Rogue, going back to the primal idea, if I increase the amount of skin to skin friction, for example, if my chest is on her back and my hands hugging her cupping her breast, there is a stronger connection and the heat is intense. As far as I have been able to determine "doggy" is the preferred position in most parts of the world.
It can be seen as 'wrong' because it is somewhat impersonal, there is no eye contact or face to face or close body contact. It is quite animalistic and primal, which suits lots of people but not others.

I have to say the "wrong hole" is a load of crap. There is such a huge difference between the two that you will KNOW what you are doing, and so will she.

I always associate doggy style with being drunk, and lacking the coordination to do anything more complicated.
