Let me preface this by saying that I have no extra holes in my body. I might consider only having an ear or two pierced if I had to, but a tongue piercing is akin to having a fingernail pulled out. That said, and the shivers and electricity going down my spine having stopped, let me add:
I much prefer a deft tongue rather than a hard fixed object bumping against sensitive nerve endings be it a an object of jewelry, dildo, or something else.
My tongue is pierced, I followed all the appropriate aftercare and didn't have any problems, thankfully! Funny thing is I did it mainly because i was driving my cousin to the piercing place to get her 1 month checkup on her tongue ring lol. I don't try to show it off or wear flashy jewelry, i wear a light pink transluscent ball and even my own mother didn't notice it there for almost a month lol.
Anyway, I do find that it gets in the way when french kissing (basically i find that your tongue either has to be in your mouth, or all the way out, its hard for it to be in between because the ball gets in the way... but i find I have a small mouth and my cousin for example says she doesnt have that problem (but she's nuts ; i couldn't eat for 24 hours after getting my tongue pierced, meanwhile my cousin was scarfing down french fries like 30 mins later bleh lol)
as for sexual pleasure, I guess it depends on the person. My current bf finds that it actually hurts if you put the tongue ring directly against the penis too hard, but i had dated a previous guy that didn't mind it, he thought it felt fine (no real difference)... of course the thing was he had a prince albert so my tongue would clink against his penis ring which could be sensitive if i did it too hard (sensitive to my mouth and teeh i mean)... lol oh the fun, it did kinda look sexy tho hehe
so i keep the tongue ring for now because well I know I ain't ever gonna go through the pain of piercing it again lol
next challenge would be nipples, but I know i'm not ready for that just yet hehe

I think they are pretty hot, but it is because it draws attention to their tongue, which leads to the thought of a makeout, and well it turns into a snowball...gets bigger and bigger until finally crashing into an avalanche of pleasure....anyways hyperboles aside,
I find the thought of a metal stud against my tongue or crotch a little revolting. I mean i know that when i kiss or nibble on my girlfriends earlobe, her earings get in the way....same happens when she does it to me....It just kinda kills the mood a bit.

Tongue piercings yield some of the grossest and most interesting infections I have treated.
Oral aside, I find tongue piercings unattractive.
I have seen infections & do not care for the look of them. Also, have never been with a partner who had one. I find it a turn off for me.
I do actually like the way it feels.
The infection risks are unfortunate though.
