Good gravy, I think I've processed to the 3rd tier of "crotchety old man" over the last few weeks. I'm having a hard time finding music that's "popular" to even be remotely palatable.
I mean honestly, this is what's going on now? This thing was a Grammy awards performer?

So, since we have a nice little eclectic group of people from everywhere, what stuff do you like?
Me personally, I'm really into almost anything. Some of my favorites are:
Seasick Steve - [url=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5661DlLWV80&ob=av2e]Seasick Steve - You Can't Teach An Old Dog New Tricks - YouTube
Jake Shimabukuro - [url=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=puSkP3uym5k]Ukulele weeps by Jake Shimabukuro - YouTube

Band of Horses - [url=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cMFWFhTFohk]Band of Horses - The Funeral (OFFICIAL VIDEO) - YouTube
Jamiroquai - [url=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4JkIs37a2JE]Jamiroquai - Virtual Insanity - YouTube

I see we got some Jamiroquai fans around here :D
And I see you've discovered Nightwish and Röyksopp. Good for you RR :cool:
That song you've posted I find simply awful, Firmus! So no need to worry about your age, this is a matter of taste. O, and I love Jamiroquai. Especially with this wonderful video from director Spike Jonze! Well, let's look at what's been playing on my playlist today: Birdy, Gotye, Nightwish, Röyksopp, Lady GaGa, Giovanca, Maria Mena, Linkin Park, Live, Metalica, Jam Nation, Juliet, Jessie J, Adele, Evanescence, Massive Attack, etc. Which probably immediately signals how I just like to listen to a lot of types of music :)
Though I must admit my heart tends to be with the bit darker music. I've picked five beauties that deal with the theme of identity and transformation; the fear, the pain and bitter-sweet victory that comes with losing and finding yourself.
[url=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9hmzR1CKGtA&feature=related]Nightwish - Nemo
"Walk the dark path. Sleep with angels. Call the past for help. Touch me with your love. And reveal to me my true name"
[url=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g45PgMJMqLY]Massive Attack - Butterfly Caught
"Paper thin thing tainted by the naked eye... Keep smiling for me"
[url=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tyvA6lFdiWc&ob=av2e]Maria Mena - Just Hold Me
"Poor little misunderstood baby, no-one likes a sad face."
[url=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PJGpsL_XYQI&ob=av2e] Evanescence - Lithium
"I want to stay in love with my sorrow"
[url=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YeaxvPLHfto] Metalica- Until it sleeps
"I tear me open, make you gone. No longer can you hurt anyone. But the fear still shakes me. So hold me, until it sleeps"
They're all from rather well-known and even popular artists, or at least they are out here ;) Not really today's music, but not that old either; resp 1990, 2003, 2006, 2006, 1997. All pretty video's too, in my opinion. Although off course youtube makes the music lose part of it's power and delicacy.
My latest discovered favorite would be "A song of myself" by Nightwish (with a different lead-singer) of their latest album, 2011:
[url=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ro0Fb6NY7T4]Nightwish- A song of myself
"Beyond all mortality. We are. Swinging in the breath of nature. In early air of the dawn of life. A sight to silence the heavens"
"How can you just be yourself. When you don't know who you are?"
"Death is the winner in any war. Nothing noble in dying for your religion, for your country, for ideology, for faith. For another man; yes"
"And there forever remains that change from G to E minor" :)
I don't think you're a "crotchety old man" Firmus lol. TBH I have a hard time listening to most of the mainstream stuff and I'm only 25!! :eek:
That aside, my tastes are bit out there in the eyes of most of my peers since I listen to a lot of EDM (electronic dance music) such as Trance, Psy-Trance, House, Soulful House, Deep House, Dubstep, Drum & Bass, Electro, Techno, Disco, Chillout, and Ambient.
I also like the various flavors of Jazz, but Smooth Jazz is my favorite as well as other genres like Metal, Grunge, Classic Rock, Classical, J-Pop, and Underground Rap. Yes there actually is GOOD rap music out there but you'll have to really search the bowels of the internet to find it since you won't hear it on mainstream radio. :mad:
I think that with the current state of communications technology, advertising and promotion that there is just a lot more rubbish that comes into view; or in this case hearing. You discovered Seasick Steve: Good for you. I enjoy him and the bassist on that recording is a hero of mine from my teenage years. There's plenty good music to be heard. Just as there is more noise being pushed there is also more real music. You just have to look harder.
I hope you enjoy these

edit: In popular music the dross does seem to rise to the top, especially at the Grammys. Still even there, outside the pop categories, sometimes deserving artists win awards. A friend's group won a grammy this year. The day after the awards he said, "I didn't even know we were nominated!"
In short, I like LIVE music. Longer answer, I grew up in the Hebrides where the local radio ran largely to Celtic - from traditional to Celtic Rock. This has led to an abiding interest in folk music.
Stan Rogers - Canada's late most popular folk singer [url=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fT-aEcPgkuA]Stan Rogers - Mary Ellen Carter - YouTube . This has a wonderful ending.

Zydeco/Cajun and Bluegrass from the States. I have all of Bill Monroe's recordings.
In the Highlands and Islands we all learned Scottish dancing - somewhat between Scandinavian clogging and Irish step dancing. But, the dances all tell stories.
I was force fed (by a grandfather) enough classical in younger years that I have retained an appreciation. Except for Mahler. Too dark.
> So, since we have a nice little eclectic group of people from everywhere, what stuff do you like?
Being a Ballroom dancer, I like Big Band music, plus the contemporary songs that we dance Waltz, Foxtrot, Rumba, Bolero, Salsa, East Coast Swing, West Coast Swing, etc. to.
I like light classical music--complex, yet not so dramatic that it puts me to sleep.
Speaking of "complex", I enjoy theater pipe organs along with their power and Majesty. We went to a recital Sunday afternoon....
I cannot stand (or sit) for the type of music I hear from a block away driving up beside me on the surface streets!
RAP? NO!
I like Jazz, Pop, some Country. I like Whitney but have ear fatigue from all the material the news media keeps playing and repeating ad infinitum.... Because of my age I also enjoy artists that many of you probably never heard of or would appreciate. This is neither a good or bad thing, it is generational.
Lastly, I like good music and have invested in the High-end stereo equipment to make what I play seem live in our house and car. (BTW, I can have bass on demand in my car and while it will "rattle my nerves", it won't be imposed on the people in the car next to me; that's quality engineering.)

I am starting to fall in love with Dub Step. Although I went to a punk rock show tonight and drank cheap beer.
We went to the theater Friday night and saw a performance of "Mama Mia". This was the second time I've seen the play, each one by a different company. As a musical, all songs were by the singing group "ABBA". What a fun evening!!
