what happens at the doctors?

Hi

ive endured painful sex for a few years now..nothing has improved so im trying to finally get the courage to go see a doctor. Im nervous enough about doctors as it is, so going for such an intimate problem is even more nerve-wracking

Could anybody tell me what they will likely do - if i sort of have some idea of what to expect it will be easier. I presume they'll want to examine me down there right - but anyone know what that entails?..do they just look?
Will they ask a lot of personal questions about my sex life? And this might be stupid but i dont wax down there cos i couldnt take the pain - will they find that disgusting?? (i do keep it somewhat neat)
thanks

I remember my wife was watching an episode of Oprah that was dealing with subjects like yours and a lady doctor stood up in the audience and pleaded with women to wash your area well before heading to the doctor. She said it's stunning how many women do not practice proper hygiene. I'm not saying you don't, but it's clear that doctor's appreciate it when you make an effort. As for hair, I'm pretty sure they've seen it all.

I would assume that they would want to do an internal exam. If the problem isn't apparent then they have to investigate further. Asking questions is their job and you should always be 100% honest. It's better to be a little embarrassed and figure out what's wrong rather then suffer in silence.

Buck has it right on the money. Telling the gyno honestly about your sex life is like telling your regular doctor honestly about your eating, drinking or smoking habits. Without accurate information from you, they can't do their job. You have to just 'lay it on the table', and don't worry about that because I highly doubt you can say anything that will catch the doctor off guard. I remember when I had my IUD inserted, at a practice I was just starting to go to, and the gyno asked me if I had any questions. Keep in mind that this was all of the second time in my life I'd been in front of this particular person. I gulped, hesitated and asked 'do we need to be careful about...um...him...dislodging anything?' The doctor didn't miss a beat, didn't even blink, he just answered the question. And if they're professional, that's how they'll respond to anything you say.
