Toy gone bad?

Last night my wife and I pulled out a dildo that we haven't used in awhile. It was a jelly type, I'm not sure exactly the material it's made of. It always had a distincitive smell, but this time I noticed the smell was a lot stonger then in the past. I used a lube that has never been a problem, but for some reason my wife experienced burning as soon as it was inserted. I started wondering if the rubber like material had started to break down. Can this happen? We've had this particular toy for about 7 years. Any insight would be appreciated.

Most toys are made with a life expectancy of maybe 2 years. This is because body heat is enough to cause plastics break down, not to mention the other stresses put on the toy during sex...

You can try putting a rubber on it to try and get more life out of it, but I'd start looking for a replacement. It's just safer that way.

Glass, metal and silicone will not be affected by anything. All other materials used for toys will degrade over time in response to body fluid and most lubricants.

It is definitely possible, and has happened to me. We now use it with a condom, but will have to get rid of it eventually.
