phthalate

Are most toys phthalate-free?
I am looking at the Decadence Doc Johnson Vibe.
Can anyone tell me if this item is phthalate-free?

If it is flexible, it is not. If solid and firm, possibly.

I think it is probably firm. It is a G-Spot Vibe.

Is phthalate-free devices a must? How safe is a vibe that contains phthalate?

It's a substance inside of some plastics that makes them more pliable and has been linked, and not linked, to various medical issues. Most medical journal's I've read(mind you less than 10), have all come to the conclusion that they don't really know how it affects things.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phthalates and yes, I know wikipedia shouldn't be used for science stuff, but it's good for quick summaries as long as you check references

So the jury is still out on phthalates?

The jury is not still out: we know they are bad news. What levels are dangerous and how they are absorbed by the body are the parts in question. Drinking from a container made with phthalates is one thing; holding an item in your vagina for five minutes is another; breathing the fumes is another.

Why do companies still produce these items if they are unsafe?

For the same reasons that tobacco companies make cigarettes: people still purchase; profitable; no agency bans them.
