You are mixing Roman with Pompeiian. There was some overlap but it appears that Pompeii took Roman art, and practices to higher level.

To the credit of the Romans, they were well aware of contraception using condoms, female condoms and various potions as pessaries that would rival modern spermicides in effectiveness.
