I find it ironic that prostitution isn't legalized and monitored. The women (and clients) would be much better off with government supervision as well as the health care which would come with it. There wouldn't be rampant abuse from pimps, kidnapped women would be harder to move and sell into the North American system (women kidnapped from small towns and forced to street walk in Vegas, etc) as I assume prostitutes would be registered somehow, and STD rates could possibly go down. Controls could be put in, ie: you have HIV, you're no longer allowed to work. John lists could be built and held internally as well, so that when hookers start turning up dead, there's an idea of what went on.

Aside from that, I find it funny that the world's oldest (or second oldest, after soldiers..) profession is so scorned. People want sex, some bad enough to pay for it. Why not make sure that it's at least safe for them to do so.

You should consult Nevada where it is legal in some counties and Europe where although it is legal - beng legal has not stopped some of the evils attached to the profession.

Please bear in mind that the sex slave trade has not been stopped, not even in America. Forcd prostitution exists.

I believe it should be legalized in order to clean it up, and yes we could tax it. Why should the call people not have to pay taxes like the rest of us. What about the husband or wife that loves their spouse, but for whatever reason ,health or lack of interest can't or will not have sex. Couples that want a threesome as a one time fantasy. What if you want to try a bi-sexual experience. If you didn't like it no harm no foul. I have spent alot of time in Europe, yes prostitution is still illegal in most countries. It isnt considered the huge problem that it is here, as one person in France told me it is like jay walking in America.

She is wise, intelligent and correct. Men really are not hairy women and we think about some things somewhat differently than women. Sex and the cost of it are one such thing.

Prostitution is cheap, efficient and immediately gratifying. You pay your money you get the woman you want (assuming she doesn't turn you down, which women worth seeing can and will do). You can have sex with incredibly hot women by only paying a small sum of dollars. It actually is worth it to pay to many men. Upto $2,500 per hour or more. Myself, $500 per hour is the most I've paid, but she was something else. Totally out of my league looks wise, but totally worth it, if only to have had the experience. I remember another lady and thinking "this is why men strive so hard to have sex with beautiful women. This is SO worth it!"

While there are risks to prostitutes (legal, social and health), a prudent man who approaches things with eyes open can mitigate most of those risks and maximize his perceived benefit (not the benefit is perceived, if not real genetically speaking, but as I said before, men don't think like women and a hot woman is worth a whole lot! A WHOLE LOT!). Secrecy and circumspection beats the social risks, knowledge of the laws beats the legal risks and dealing with the more professional ladies who take care of themselves and not being a total fool beats most of the STI risk. The cost benefit analysis becomes very good all things considered.

Also, prostitution is a relatively cheap way to have sex with lots of women (which most men are rather interested in). You don't have to pay the cost of wining, dining, winning her heart and her trust. You pay your money, you get laid. Simple, honest straightforward cheap and easy. Crass, low and disgusting maybe, but bloody effective!

And efficient!

Also, the average man will not succeed in wooing the same number of hot women as he can pay for. Unless he dedicates himself to wooing women (there are men who do this of course), he cannot have a life, carry on a job, have outside hobbies etc. He just will not ever be able to have sex with as many beautiful women as he can with just $10,000 or so. This is a calculus that enters into some men's minds, and it's a pretty good deal all things considered.

Also, the cost of marital sex (assuming faithfulness) is very very high properly understood. The cost of marital sex is NOT HAVING SEX WITH EVERY OTHER WOMAN. It's an economic concept called opportunity cost. If you marry this woman, you can't have sex with every other woman out there. If you don't think you can have sex with every other woman, the opportunity cost is low or non existent. If you think you can sex with even 10% of the women out there, the opportunity cost can be very high indeed. It depends on the man and how important to him it is to have sex with lots of women, good looking women, or just women in general. Men are all over the map on this one, but most men want a fair number of women and most men will fall for a very beautiful woman. Prostitutes can fall into any of these categories (quantity or quality or a measure of both) at reasonable cost at relatively low risk.

With respect to opportunity cost, I don't think that most men ever really think about it this way, but there is a certain logic to it that becomes evident on a bit of reflection. I think the fact that most men get married, and that many married men (not all but a significant percentage) see prostitutes or cheat clearly indicates that most men don't think this way. If they did, they would either marry less or simply behave differently. I say this speaking of North American society where prostitution is not well received generally and where I know something about the rates of cheating and how men behave. It's definitely different in other cultures where ideas about marriage prostitution and sex are different.

Umm,,, Men also see prostitutes simply because they can. It's just that simple in a certain sense. Also, there strangely is a shortage of readily available sex economically speaking. If there wasn't prostitution would not exist as there would be no demand for it. But the fact is that prostitution has existed at all times and places and as such, there must necessarily be a shortage of sex. Weird as all heck to be sure, but economically speaking (and prostitution is an economic transaction), it must be true. There is a shortage of sex or sex partners, or available sex. Prostitutes exploit this shortage of sex supply by providing sex at a price. Generally speaking, that price is pretty reasonable, but the sky is the limit. I've heard of prices as high as $10k an hour, but in my neck of the woods, it's usually $160 to $300, which is pretty affordable all things considered. And yes, sex really is that valuable to some men.

I realize that most or some of what I'm writing is offensive, rude, low and not encouraging to some or all of you, but I think that most of it fairly valid from my observation of hundred of pooners (or Johns or punters or whatever you want to call them) and observing men and women generally. I'm a punter too and I think a lot so I know something whereof I speak from experience.

Some men really do think about sex differently than women and really do want something a bit different than women. Most men want a loving loyal wife, but most men will accept or want some on the side too if they can get it. Single men, heck, the world's our oyster as long as we have the cash and for the cost as little as ten cases of beer, you can sex with a fairly attractive woman without any of the hastle and difficulty of a relationship. It's a better deal than it sounds like and once you learn how to minimize risks, it's a very good deal indeed.

Also, if you want to have sex with very different women from the world over, in most large cities, you can have sex at a reasonable price with women from all over the world. Asians, Africans, Europeans, South Americans, Indians, you name it you can have it for a few hundred dollars. The cost of wooing the same women and getting them the traditional way (in money, time, effort, travel etc.) is beyond the reach of most men. Prostitution is the way to go to sample the exotic. Heck even traveling to a few locales in the world and sampling the local prostitution pool is cheaper in many ways, but due to a lack of knowledge (especially respecting the laws) it is far riskier too. However, due to the internet and the general dissemination of knowledge, these risks are being substantially reduced and the knowledge of what is possible is growing.

The other thing is, getting laid the usual way is hard. Women probably don't perceive how hard it is, but as a man, who was unattractive to women and had no idea how to get into their pants before, from experience I can tell you it's hard. With prostitutes, it only takes money. It's just that simple.

Again, back to why do men go to prostitutes. It's biology. Men want to spread their seed. There is some evidence that men are WAAAY less successful than women in being reproductively successful. See here: Is There Anything Good About Men and read up under the heading the most under appreciated fact. It's mindboggling!!!! If you thought women had it tough, reproductive speaking (which is all that matters evolutionarily speaking) men have it twice as hard. Read it and laugh at how easy a woman has it vs. a man. This also explains (somewhat at least) why there is a shortage of sex and why men behave the way they do. I think that there is a HUGE amount of explanatory power in the facts discussed in this article.

You may think this stuff is crap, but I read (and having the necessary education I understood) the underlying genetic research for the author's conclusions. It didn't strike me as utter b.s. off the bat, and furthermore, it wasn't even something the investigators were looking for it was something they noticed in their investigations and that they wrote about. But it is VERY significant.

IF you don't believe me, consider that Ghengis Khan (yes, that Ghengis Khan) who had an estimated 20,000 wives in his life and countless children is estimated to have 80,000,000 living descendants today. Yes, that's EIGHTY MILLION LIVING DESCENDENTS. He is one of the most reproductively successful human beings ever known to exist. A full 1.3% of all people on Earth today are his direct descendants! To the extent that reproductive success matters (evolutionarily speaking a whole lot!!!), Khan kicked the butts of virtually every man who ever lived in the game of life. This explains a lot of male behaviour (not all), prostitution and a whole bunch of other things.

Note I am aware (as are all men) that prostitutes don't want to have your children, they want your money. However, the desire for sex, however fulfilled, is satisfactory almost all of the time (and yes I know it's a bit different for women though not completely) so prostitutes are never out of business completely.

I could say more, but I'm at about the end of my thoughts just off the cuff, so I'll leave it here.

I would add one more point. As EEK has noted, sex slavery and violence etc. is a real problem. However, in my experience and in my consideration of the issue it is not the problem that it is made out to be in the media. Given the number of prostitutes (full time, part time or whatever) the different circumstances under which prostitution occurs (which is not all street prostitution where you see the worst of it, in fact, in my neck of the woods, it's estimated that 90% of prostitutes do not work on the street and given my experience that's not an unreasonable estimate), the horrors that the media loves to ram down our throats is a bit of a myth for the majority of prostitutes and prostitution. However, for a variety of political and social reasons, the media will not or cannot tell Joe Public the truth. This may, on balance, be a good thing. The world would be a very different place if the Average Joe was consciously aware of the opportunity cost of marriage and the relatively low cost of prostitution.

I suppose as a final thought, I want to point out the following as well. In a study of college students, where they took an average looking guy and an average looking girl and asked them to go upto complete strangers of the opposite sex and asked them to go back to their room to have sex with them, 80% of the males said yes (after looking around to check if they were being watched) to the average looking woman whereas 80% of the women said no with a look of disgust and horror on their faces. Part of this is definitely socialization, but part of it is certainly a reflection of differing mating strategies (which play into prostitution behaviorally speaking). You will note that while there are prostitutes who service women, they are far fewer in number (yes I've spoken to a few and heard their stories and reviews of their performance) and provide rather different services. There is much less demand too, because why on God's green earth would a woman pay? All she has to do is say "YES!". It's just not that simple for a man because even a prostitute has to be paid. Think about it.

Ok, this really is my final thought. If we really wanted to end prostitution, we would beat it at the source. Put men into the same position that women are. Socialize women (if it could be done, evolution works against this as will be aptly shown by the responses here I'm sure) to have sex like men at the drop of a hat. Remove the shortage of supply of sex and the demand for prostitutes services will fall like a stone and men will simply cease seeing prostitutes or there would be a dramatic decline for their services. Make sure that the most attractive women are free, easy and readily available too, but make every woman generally available (you'd be surprised by what men are really looking for, it's not necessarily what you'd think, though that is generally true). If this were done, the economic demand for sex that is created by the shortage of supply of sex (blow jobs anyone? Make sure that every women gives at least 500 different men a blowjob in her life and we're well on way to ending prostitution) would dry up and blow away and prostitution would be ended as the supply and demand factors that lead to its existence would largely cease. Why would any man travel 10 blocks to see a prostitute when he can just go upstairs in his apartment building or to his neighbor's place and ask the lady dwelling therein for sex and get it? Yes, it would really have to be almost (not quite maybe but almost) that simple to get sex for prostitution to end.

See why it doesn't end and why it will never end? At least not until our evolutionarily mandated mating strategies change. I suppose we could re-engineer human beings, but I don't know that we want to go there.

This is my economic reasoning on the matter. Of course, child prostitution would still exist, but this is a whole other abhorrent kettle of fish that I won't bother to discuss because it's WAAAY to disgusting for me to even contemplate. However, two consenting adults doing what they would like of their own free will for whatever reasons (other than coercion) I have no problem with it.

It's also worth noting that prostitution or prostitution like behaviour has now been noted in chimpanzees (that are relatively similar to us) and in fiddler crabs (of all things!). In other species, the quid pro quo of sex for a benefit of some sort has been observed. Yet another reason that prostitution isn't likely to go away anytime soon....

Another way to end prostitution is to chemically castrate every male on earth. That should reduce their sexual desire to a considerable extent (though not entirely). A reduction in demand would also eliminate prostitution.

Alternatively, you could seriously skew sex ratios in favour of males (say if there were 4 women for every man on Earth). This would also reduce the demand for sex in absolute terms, would be reduced by 75%. Selective abortion would achieve this end in short order. I suppose that this would greatly increase the demand for males to satisfy women (in whatever capacity, relationship, sexual or otherwise). It would be a hardship of sorts for women, but no different than the hardships that men presently enjoy vis a vis satisfying their sexual desire (which leads to prostitution).

I suppose there are other ways to reduce demand, but these are the ones that come immediately to mind.

I did an English paper over this subject. I am for legalizing prostitution. It needs to be regulated by the government if it becomes legalized in more states. In Nevada there no one has gotten a STD in a legal brothel.

Prostitution being illegal causes more problems. There are high risk of getting a STD. The prostitutes can be beaten, raped, or murdered. Drugs are often involved in the life of a prostitute.

Pimps are a huge problem. They are pathetic men who want to control and abuse women.

I don't think prostitution should be legal, but I don't think whores or johns should be risking jail time. And if we're speaking on an evolutionary level, then I must be looking for an alpha male.
