Dear moderators,
I have just a little question about the guidelines. For a while now I've been a bit confused on what is and what isn't considered appropriate language Now, I know this website has high standards and I much appreciate it!!! As I do appreciate that you moderators take your time to tidy things up; thank you! I'm not trying to start a discussion on what is or what isn't. Since I thought this information could be useful to others, I made it into a post, instead of PM. I'm simply asking because I do my best to stick to the appropriate language on this forum and I'd like to keep it that way! ![]() So; I was under the impression that if you're quoting something someone said it is allowed to be done literary. From the point of view it would actually be changing someone's words if you do. And I thought it is allowed to use expressions since the literal meaning doesn't matter no more, only the symbolic value. My posts so far haven't been edited, so I considered it appropriate. But sometimes I see the posts of other member are edited. For example, today I came across this post to later find it has been edited: Quote:
It sort of surprises me that this word is considered offensive/vulgar/etc, when I see the word "damn(ed)" not removed or edited. When translated to Dutch it is a rather offensive word. Since you are wishing the other or the subject to be cursed, it makes it the best "curseword" of them all . Could it be that there is another standard of severity of the word in English culture (???). There's no dictionary that explains me that Don't get me wrong; I'm not asking to ban it. It's just that I seem to be missing something here and I can't put my finger on what it is...Thank you in advance for replying!

i'm not a mod RR, but i do know the english language and american culture. in your examples the point can be understood with synonyms of that slang word that are not considered as offensive. poop would be one example that could replace it. acceptance all depends on what one is use to. i think when i was growing up they couldn't say ass on tv. they were even more strict in my parents generation, but were much more creative in what they said since they couldn't be vulgar. i have watched the BBC and they don't bleep out the word shit on the shows i have watched. so it all depends on culture and what the national regulator wants to do. we also don't bleep out damn but do bleep out saying the Lord's name is vain when putting God before saying damn. one channel FX is a little more lenient like the BBC in censoring.
to your question about quoting someone that says an expletive; i can't answer for the mods, but unless the word is used in an educational discussion than it may be considered just as offensive to quote it. an example would be talking about black history and using the n word. one saying it to not sugar coat what was said is not offensive compared to a rapper saying it in a music video. also to the mods - isn't there an ability to pre-sensor words in the back office? so if someone says the f word you could automatically make it change to f**k for example. |

there are settings within the constructs of vBulletin (the forum hosting co.) where you can set certain words as innapropriate and the forum will automatically replace them with a designate word, such as in the example you have shown.
I used to be on another adult forum a couple of years ago and the words "kid" or "child" were automatically blocked out, such that if you typed "childhood" it came out "*****hood" These are done within the control panel and can be set as the mods see fit. However as this site is geared towards adults, you would think a few of these words might be left untouched, like the aforementioned reference to feces |

At least a dozen years ago or more, one of the hospital TV shows had a week's worth of teasers saying that there was going to be a ground breaking announcement, a first, on next week's program that was going to get passed by the censors. I think it was "Chicago Hope", although, it might have been another program. The night came, the plot of the show was what happened during the night shift in which nothing went right and among several problems, they lost a couple of patients. The doctors were assembled, later, in a conference room where they conducted a Morbidity and Mortality hearing in order to assess what went wrong with these two cases, etc. After much discussion and analysis, one of the doctors folded his hands behind his head, leaned back in his chair and simply announced: "well, sometimes s**t happens!" This was the first time such language was permitted on American television. Curious, as much as I am against bad language in conversation, this remark just seemed so appropriate--like what else could be said under the circumstances. The remark just fit after all the events that had occurred the previous shift.
I have mixed feelings about expletives. As in the quote, above, I do not see anything particularly egregious about using the s-word. On the other hand when someone frequently interjects one or more of these words into the flow of their general conversation, I become critical. I almost want to hand the person an unabridged English dictionary for them to find alternative words, in the hope they will take pride in the use of our language and find better words. Of similar concern are all the reminders issued by members of the community with regard to usage such as "me and her", "your" instead of "you're", etc. We have to appreciate the fact that a good number of participants to this site live in foreign countries all over the globe, often trying to understand the English language that is not native to them. What we should all be concerned about is how we appear to others, how we as a civil people present ourselves and come across to others. If we mutilate our language when speaking or writing to others, what does this say to others about we as a culture? At the very least, I believe each of us should do a bit of self editing and if the s- word or other is thought necessary, put in the **** instead of the letters. This demonstrates more class and everyone will get the message. -doc |

In most cases you would have a much better success ratio by holding the dictionary against their ear and striking it with a large sledgehammer. While this will not drive the knowledge contained in that book directly into the subjects brain, it will powerfully motivate most individuals, in a surprisingly short span of time, to stop their displays of foolishness and/or stupidity. After a few judicious applications of treatment, they may actually begin to use the dictionary for it's intended purpose simply because if they are holding it, it probably won't be next to their head, and if they going to carry it around, they will open it sooner or later, usually as soon as you show them the hammer.
Unfortunately, the global war on cyber-stupidity is one that I fear we shall never win by conventional means, as stupidity is a deep and endless chasm that most people are too lazy to try to climb out of because the chairs are comfortable, they have their TIVO programmed the way they like it, and they can answer almost half the questions on "Are You Smarter Than A Fifth Grader?". I'm afraid it's time, pass out the dictionaries and the hammers, it's education time! ![]() |
