Because orgasms, in either sex, are a great release of muscle tension, those positions that cause you to support yourself and tense muscles will accelerate the orgasm. Conversely, if the man is quite relaxed, he tends to last longer. You have learned this lying on your back.
In addition to using positions that relax the man, is the fact that some positions are better than others for stimulating the penis in the best or required way. For me at least, the woman superior position does not provide the necessary stimulation and so I do not get worked up as much or as soon. So, in addition to what Brandye states, consider finding those positions that don't necessarily "rub you the right way".
