I don't doubt that many people let themselves go way too much, but we shouldn't be overly generalized.
The BMI's I have used are only indicators and a poor science--in my opinion. If I do one based on the day, I either fall under athletic or underweight. Truest measure is standing in front of a mirror and looking at yourself 1-naked & 2-with underwear on. Generally I find too many people are overweight when I see patients or look around. Not saying one must be bone thin but rolls of fat is not healthy.

Based on my BMI; I still have excess fat in areas I'd like to see it vanish in. However, realize if I loose to much I will look like a skeleton--even though I do weight & strength training.

To Carbheat: The best you can both do for yourselves and for each other is go to a gym together; do a cardiovascular routine & do some free weights. As you get loosing fat you, will build muscle. The more muscle you have the more fat your body burns. Additionally, diet has to be watched. You gradually decrease your caloric count and eat healthier foods. As you begin to see results on the exterior, realize on the inside you are strengthening your heart & taking stains off your knees--reduction of health issues which get worse with time & age. Each of you have to find the point of exercise which suits your body and time--the point where your body works "fine-tuned".

Similar to Brandye; I have had to get a cath into large female patients...took at times 3-5 of us to do it--trying to get through the folds of skin much less to find the urethra. Moreover, I have had large patients pull on me to help them lift...well, I am not required to be injured b/c someone has not taken care of themselves. This is one of the major reasons I left working as a RN and went on to NP school---spinal surgery from being yanked on. I recall my first day back to work after surgery; I had an obese woman implant herself into a wheelchair b/c her back hurt. I told her upfront to wait so I could get some other's to help her out & on to the exam stretcher [& why]. What was the first thing she did? Pulled me. I went out for another 2 weeks since she did a pretty good yank on me before I could back up.

These are all good reasons why people should exercise, stay in shape, and really make it a way of life. You will live a longer, happier, & healthier life together.

However, until these two are both down to a reasonable size, doing a heavy workout at the gym would be counter-productive which is why I recommended walking, just walking for 30 minutes, twice a day. They can do that almost anywhere. It is free. No special equipment necessary beyond a good pair of shoes. Then they just have to step out a bit. Walking can also be combined with other activities such as owl counting, bird watching, photography, conversation and so on.

They have to do this together, consistenly, without becoming bored, and without injury if they are to make it.

I always emphasize the gym b/c of the weather...walking here right now you might either drowned or freeze to death! The reason I use a treadmill. I do not jog--just walk with my IPOD & headphones. Weights? Nothing drastic; light and get the arms/legs moving; it's easy to begin. Start the best you can even if only 10 minutes and increase as comfortable. The point is to move...inside or outside! Stamina and energy gradually increase and you want to do more. Take on too much too fast & one gets discouraged or can be injured.

Not commenting on your specific case (and that of your wife) because you MAY be an exception, but there is very rarely an excuse for extreme obesity.

I know a number of very overweight folks - and it is blindingly obvious to all (but them) that it is (in every case) a matter of too much/wrong food and lack of exercise. Their obesity is destroying more aspects of their life than simply sex!

Having said that - freedom of choice means that I support their right to be that way if they want. I just find it hard to be empathetic to their frequent complaints about their self-image and deteriorating health.

A number of helpful suggestions have been made re how to sexually please an obese woman - I hope they help.

An mp3 player and a good set of headphones are money well spent for anybody who wants to get into a daily walking / gym regimen. I'm not as good as I should be, but when I'm just on the verge of completely talking myself out of going I'll think "I'd like to hear <fill in the blank with your favorite album>" and that usually makes it seem okay. If you're not into to music there's tons of audio books or podcasts. It makes the time whizz by.

Keeps you motivated, provides time to think, and to do something good for your body! Once you get going you create a routine which you don't want to miss. And I set one day of the week to eat what I wish if it's going to be 5 Klondike bars then that's on one day rather then one over 5 days.

I can't workout unless I have a few selections from the Rocky movies.....greatest movie ever made.....that and this song...http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E4J-23XKYXk

Yeah I see myself as a lesser version of him....I know what it's like to see your dreams disappear because you don't have enough faith in yourself.

I was going to join a group that competes nationally for weightlifting but just don't want to look like an idiot. Suppose I go and for a few moments I feel good, then the next guy adds 200lbs to my total and does it with ease....

I know, there I go getting all negative again...

He looks so young there! So if you don't try, how will you know what you are capable of? You are young...try. Failure is when you do not learn from a mistake; not from trying.

I read once "It's hard to fail, but it's even worse to never try to succeed". Maybe if I got back into it, I could try for the Superman lift that's held in Metropolis every year. I've been out of the game for awhile and I have to admit, the weight has sneaked up on me. When you go 5 times a week then suddenly stop, it's like a freight train hitting the brakes at top speed, lol.

You have to try if it's something you want...if you never do, you will spend your life wondering; "what if"??? Only thing you have to loose is a bit of feeling bad if you don't do well---but what if you did? Chicken????
