Are you referring to Maverick's, or the general HMB locations? That place is crazy, covered in rocks, has freezing water, and is home to great whites. Do you surf there in the summers, winters, or year round? If you want consistent surf for all conditions, Black's in La Jolla is the best sand break in the continental US. |

Yes, the Mavericks that arrive on that part of the coast..........the weather
is really amazing there. Yeah, it was wild how rocky the entire coast is there probably the coldest water I have ever felt especially in the month of August. I had heard that about the Great Whites but did not see any. Are there many attacks?? Is there a healthy seal population somewhere close or is it the cold water that attracts them? That is one of the most dangerous surfing sites on the planet when the big storms in the Pacific shoot to the south. HUGE swails 20 to 25' especially near Pillar Point. Maverick's is the name of *big* break at Half Moon Bay. It's where Mark Foo drowned in '94. It is easily one of the meanest places to surf on the planet because of the multiple areas of rocks, cold water, wave thickness, a very long paddle to get to the break, and, the least of your worries, Great Whites. Monterey Bay is only 60miles south by water and is home to tens of thousands of seals and walrus so there are whites everywhere. That region has a few attacks per year. Having lived in Monterey and watched the seals be chomped in half.......I prefer the SoCal surfing!!!! Of course Solana Beach had only it's 3rd attack in 100yrs recently and that definitely messed with my head when out there this year!
Ever paddle out there? |

No way on the Mavericks. Once upon a time, I was OK at another sport but
it certainly was not surfing. That surf is above my "pay grade." They told stories about how the Mavericks "radiate" danger. Foo was a great Hawaiian surfer who obviously came to surf the Maverick. I actually read a magazine article about the whole deal. That surf is simply TOO Large. I was actually there and down to Carmel/Monterey for another pursuit on land but along the coast on green grass........LOL. Not much green grass there which sort of blew me away. They say off the breaks there is some DEEP ocean there at Half Moon Bay. That is big wave surfing at it's best regardless of what North Shore surfers say especially when you combine all the elements......frigid water, power/height of the waves, rock subsurface, the length you must paddle to actually get to the surf............NO THANKS. |

Fun, is there a particular time of year where the Mavericks are present
and the surf is not at insane high levels?????? 10 to 15' surf as opposed to the 25' plus levels? It appears to be a long paddle to the break is that as long as it appears?? Have you ever been there during the High Level surf? I was amazed how LAID back Half Moon Bay was. Other than the Ritz and a very upscale housing development there was no much in my opinion. Is my observation close? |
