If you are talking about an annual gyn exam? Or just a regular check up?
If it's a gyn exam you give a urine specimen and they do a finger stick to do a blood count, the nurse asks questions and then the doctor asks you questions. Mainly about your health, any medications you are taking, when you first began your period, any problems, and any history of any sexual activity. During the exam the doctor should be explaining everything he/she is doing or about to do. No surprises.
You are in a gown. Generally the doc will check your heart, lungs, then have you lye flat to feel your abdomen & listen to it. Then they have you slide down to the end of the table, putting your legs in the stirrups. And the doc inserts a speculum, checks the cervix, and takes a sampling of the cells with a small swap (this does not hurt). Then the speculum is removed and they insert two lubricated fingers into the vagina to see if all is well and they do a quick rectal check.
You get dressed after the doc leaves and talk in the office. Be sure to bring any questions you have and make sure you write them down on paper so you don't forget.
It does not hurt, it's sort of annoying but something we have to do.
