Period while on the pill

I am on the Loestrin Fe pill and have been taking it 24/7/365 since April of this year- no breaks. (I have recently found out that my gynae omitted to mention that I should take a five-day break every three months, but I have not done that yet.) For the last three days, I have had fairly bad cramps, but I chalked it up to abdominal pain. However, today, I got my period. This is not spotting- this is out and out period, medium flow, with blood ranging from normal red to dark brown, small clumps included. The flow and cramping is normal- or it would be, IF I were due to have my period. I'm not. I'm on the pill and my understanding is that this should not be happening. What is the cause, and how worried should I be about this?

The GP's office is closed right now and I'm not considering this a hospital emergency- but I will be visiting the doctor tomorrow. In the meantime, can anyone give me some ideas?

I would just call the office in the am; most likely just breakthrough bleeding. Do not concern yourself with this, just clarify it with the office. Also, keep taking the pills unless he/she directs you otherwise. Discuss the need to stop the pill to enduce a 3 day period...and what his/her rationale was for taking them non-stop.

I take them nonstop because I take them for hormonal migraines. I'll see the doc in an hour or so.

I am sure you got your answer from your doctor.
For others reading this.

If the pill were being taken as directed by the manufacturer, this would be unusual - but not unheard of. Skipping the break the doctor that the doctor failed to mention every three months, the uterine lining continued to develop to the point where it had to be shed. Ergo, a period while still taking the pill.

I find using an iron added pill interesting for this use. Are you anemic?

I was unable to get an appointment before tomorrow. However, your explanation makes a lot of sense.

I am not anemic. This is the pill that the ex-gynaecologist prescribed for me (this is also the gynae who told me that there was nothing the matter with me and that I am a "perfectly normal virgin girl" when a second opinion showed that I had a microperforated hymen and needed a hymenotomy.) New gynae didn't seem to have a problem with this particular pill but I will certainly mention it to him as a concern.

I am glad you switched doctors. As for the pill you are one, doctors have their favorites to start with. I am biased but if a woman needs iron, the diet is the place to start. If not, why prescribe a pill with iron?

What pill brands do you, personally, prefer?

Argh. The GP has had to cancel my appointment because they had several emergencies and everyone was on call. They're going to have to refer me out to a gynaecologist for this anyway. Loestrin Fe has a 4-day placebo period. I am assuming that I should wait four days before taking my next pill, then? I have not taken the active pills since I started bleeding.
