Period Has Been on for 10 days

Hi, my period has been on for ten days. When it first came on, it was really light, almost as if it was having trouble, like stopped up for lack of better words. Now its been pretty moderate to heavy. I do not have any insurance right now,and I dont know what to do. I work 3rd shift, I dont get that much sleep, and I havent had a well balanced meal in like 3 mos, any one know whats going on?

It's not uncommon for your cycle to go as it has, very erratic. Sounds as if you began to spot, then it stopped and went into a regular cycle. It could be due to stress, poor nutrition, odd shift work, lack of sleep, etc. I would not concern yourself with this unless there is a chance of pregnancy. If this becomes a regular habit go to the gyn at a clinic, Planned Parenthood, or on campus since further evaluation may be in order. Hormones fluctuate monthly. Be certain to document this anomaly on your calendar so you keep track of it.

I am going to make an appointment with planned parenthood.

Not a bad idea!

High stress, poor diet, no sleep, over worked and on. You have answered your own question.

Thanks ladies.

I went to planned parenthood, the dr ran a preg test which was neg, then she did a gc/chlamydia test, then she did a pap. Its pretty heavy but she still did it. She put me on birth control because she thinks it is a hormonal imbalance.

Glad to hear you went! Now stop worrying!

Someone actually listens to us!

LOL, Yeah, you ladies are great, I know I had to do something because this is crazy. I will keep you all updated.

My period left about two days after I started taking the pills, so I dont know if it was the BC or what.

Wait, WHAT. The doc is completely ignoring that your LIFESTYLE is most likely causing erratic cycles, and is instead putting you on drugs to correct an issue that can be easily solved by more sleep and a better diet? Um.....

No way to tell but you took action and the doctor prescribed and things are clearing up. Well done.

Yeah, she did not ask about my lifestyle, other than my sexual health and practices.

Sometimes your lifestyle can't change and the pill will keep you from becoming anemic. I was working 3rd shift and living on a friends couch and had my period for 3 weeks heavy before going to the doctor because I had no insurance. Yeah the doctor said I should slow down and eat right but I was sleeping on a couch and trying to save up enough money to get a place of my own to live. Slowing down isn't always an option. We can't all have 3 square meals a day and 8 hours of restful uninterupted sleep and it's better that the doctor keep her from getting sick than lecture her and say "Fix yuour lifestyle."
