Both, there is no right or wrong here. I like both, and as I get more aroused I like more pressure applied. Then some gentle sucking on the clit and occasionally a light nibble.

Yeah no doubt. I was experimenting with both, but the side to side flick was alot faster and much easier and I could keep it going for a lot longer than the "up and down" motion.

If you want to do both like your a tongue master, spell out the alphabet with your tongue over and over again (while your in the tongue flicking portion of the show). You can do it fast. It varies the flicks of your tongue very well. AND you you will be able to recognize the movements that really work for your girl - M N O P is usually a good part that you'll come back to over and over again, but the circular motions tend to rule is what I've found...
