I just got a prescription for the Nuva ring,
and one thing that caught my eye was that the box states that the pharmacist should put an expiry of 4 months on the box when dispensing, but there is also an obvious date of expiry from the manufacturer that is about 2 years away.
my question is,
is does this pharmacist expiry date really hold any weight? I'm going abroad for a year, and want to get my years worth of rings now to take with me, but taking into consideration that they would all be written up with a 4 month expiry date... would that have any effect on the safety and effectiveness of the ring? why would the pharmacist have to put a 4 month expiry on it, when it could be dispensed at any time.

As long as the ring packaging (inside the box) is sealed, the manufacturer's date is good. The druggist date is driven by some local law. Never encountered that. I have prescribed a year's worth of rings for travellers. She came home with chlamydia!
With hormonal contraception, I do emphasize the expiry date. With many drugs this is simply arbitrary but the ring has "active" ingredients that do decay slowly.
