Not really a sex question

This is more of an etiquette question than a sex question, sorry:

I happen to be fortunate enough to be engaged to a stunningly pretty girl. (I know...I'm probably a little biased...but, seriously she's quite attractive). A few days after introducing her to some colleagues of mine, one of them commented on how beautiful she thought my fiancée is.

I was kind of at a loss to come up with a response. Saying 'thank you' sounded kind of weird to me (I certainly had nothing to do with my future wife's appearance). So after a little stammering, I jokingly made some self-deprecating remark along the lines of 'how a scrub like me ended up with such a pretty girl'. The girl who offered the compliment gave me this look that suggested I had said something in poor taste.

Does my response sound inappropriate to anyone?
How the heck are you supposed to respond to a comment like that?
I'm confused...

I would bashfully respond, "Thank you, I like to think so."

Your remark about how a 'scrub' like yourself ended up with her implied that she 'settled' for someone of lesser social value, thus implying that she was unable to secure a man of higher social value. Therefore your remark indicated that she was 'defective' in some manner, otherwise she would not be with you. Thus your response might have been interpreted as a subtle jab against your fiancée.

I think women pick up on these subtle 'social order' sort of things much more readily than men. Though IMO it is a remarkably fascinating topic.

Wow, moose hd. You must have a psychology background. Your explanation was really well thought out.

I just have one question: what is 'IMO'.

I like women, too

IMO = In my opinion

Moose is right on with this one. Another excellent response is "Yes, she is!" said with enthusiasm.

I would have stopped with "thank you".

If anything is to be added next time, perhaps a wry, knowing, little smile, too.

Nothing beats agreeing, enthusiastically, with a compliment directed more at your fiance than at you.
