Older Britons Use Condoms Less Frequently Than Teenagers

Quote:
People in their 30s and 40s living in the United Kingdom are half as likely as teenagers to use a condom when having sex with a new partner, according to a study published recently in the International Journal of Epidemiology, London's Daily Telegraph reports. The study found that nearly 70% of those between ages 16 and 19 used a condom with a new partner, compared with 38% of men and 29% of women between ages 35 and 44 (Gammell, Daily Telegraph, 11/12). The new information follows an announcement from the United Kingdom's Health Protection Agency that rates of sexually transmitted infections such as HIV are on the rise in the country, with a 6% increase in the total number of new STIs diagnosed in 2007 compared with 2006 (BBC News, 11/12).

Well, I hope that if they are not using condoms as much that this simply means that more older Britons are simply in monogamous and STD free relationships.

What it means is the UK is suffering a pandemic of STDs in retirement communities. In the age group studied in this research are many people who attained sexual maturity before the press for HIV education that really began about 1990 in the UK.

Oh well that's certainly not a good thing. Looks like it's time for more sex education directed towards the older community in the UK.

Well, at least nowadays we blokes do not have to go full of embarrassment into a chemists store and end up asking some lady for a bottle of Lucozade!! Also, bear in mind that many of us have memories of condoms so thick one could have used them to retread a Dunlop tyre. No wonder some of us are not keen!

Yes, those old Silver Tex did resemble tyre tubes. But look at the reality of today's developed world: By age 55 women are beginning to outnumber men and the imbalance increases with age.

Women of a certain age (ahem) are faced with three choices: celibacy, finding companionship with another woman or sharing what few men are available. No comment on the first though it is the most common with most women explaining they "simply no longer miss sex.". On the second, more common than most of us are willing to accept. With the third we have a recipe for STDs gone amok among the senior population. The same precautions we advise to teens should be followed by seniors.

It's probably also more common that older men need more stimulation to maintain an erection and are more likely to ditch the condoms for extra sensation.

Each person was interviewed face-to-face, and then answered more sensitive questions about sexual issues using a computer-assisted self-interview. Study participants reported the number of sexual partners they'd had, and also gave detailed information on the nature of their last three relationships.
