The point being missed is that there is a vast difference between knowing someone casually for a long time and then suddenly upping the level of intimacy that comes with dating, even when so brief.

As noted in one of the articles, here is a hierarchy of intimacy between people:

1. Casual acquaintances
2. Casual friends
3. Close friends
4. Best friend
5. Loving a friend
6. Being "In Love" with another

Perhaps you are friends with her Mom and Dad but you're not going to be marrying either of them. Speaking as a parent - yeah, you may be okay - as a friend of hers - but you may not be HE whom her parents wish her to marry. There is a huge difference there, buddy.
