What is a "Safe Word"? Choosing & Using...

Giraffe sounds like a great word that can be understood even with a gag in place. You weren't going to do anything kinky with the actual giraffe were you EvilEvilKitten?

But a safe word is best when it is short, and totally non-germane!

Having been involved, and living in the Master/slave ~ Dom/sub life-style for many years...

The do and don't, the limits, and the such are discussed in detail, and is then written in a contract between the Master and slave. And said contract can be altered at any time, by the Master, as well as the slave.

However, there will be certain circumstances, and things that the Master may wish to try/do to/or with his slave...that may not have been discussed, nor written into the contract.

Therefore a "safe" word is very important! And as some have mentioned, amber and red are usually the words that are used in this life-style. Amber meaning, as some have mentioned...means to proceed with caution, just as it means on a traffic light. And of course, the word red, which would mean stop, just as it means on a traffic light.

As for having a "safe" word, which can not easily be spoken and/or heard when a ball gag is involved...the best thing to use as a "safe" word, signal if you will...is to flick your partner as hard as possible...much like flicking ones ear like many of us probably did as kids. LOL

After all, using a tight squeeze, or rapid squeezes (2-3-4 in a row), pinching, eye blinking (not going to do much good if the partner can't see your eyes, especially if he/she is blind folded as well as being gagged), biting, scratching, what have you along those lines are also not very good options. After all, all those things are done quite often to one another in the life-style.

Therefore, I have found throughout the years...flicking your partner is the best "safe" word when one can not speak clearly and/or when one can not understand the "safe" word...after all, how many times have any of you flicked your partner as hard as possible during sex?

My girl, and I use "Kitty Litter" It may be two words but it works wonders.
Or like "Jackrabbit" something entirely random works best.
