Brandye is a jewel in the rough
Gynol II or K-Y+ are the two most common brands of vaginal jelly. Available in most chemist/druggist/apothecaries. The first time, get the the jelly with the applicator. That only needs be purchased once. Condom plus vaginal jelly is roughly as effective as being on the pill. There is always a chance.

Oh now that I think about it the lube I purchased (k-y not sure about what brand) may be spermicidal. I will have my gf look at it (as we keep it at her house because that is where we plan on having sex) but what exactly will it say? Will it flat out say spemicidal or will it have some other term that means it is spermicidal?

It will say "spermicidal". If not marked with that--it's not and it should say it contains X amount of spermicide per application (based on the product) look under "active ingredients" . Walgreen's carries such! Or you can order on-line from drugstore.com.

K-Y is one of the two major brands of "personal lubricants." K-Y+ is their vaginal jelly. K-Y+ is essentially the personal luibricant (water based and will not harm condoms) plus spermicide. The box clearly states that it is spermicidal.

Read the label in the store and save some money.

I've been using birth control alone for years and I haven't gotten pregnant, and it says on my packet that it is 99.9% effective... so I dont know where the 3/100 is coming from. But my partner and I also withdrawal, though not that effective, it still adds a little extra protection without that much effort. I'm also really good about taking the pill though, if you arent its only 95% effective. I used to set the alarm on my cell phone though for the time I needed to take it for like a year lol. It sounds corny, but its a really good way to get used to taking it, especially if your cell is always in your pocket and you make the ringer super loud. If youre taking your pill at a time your cell phone cant ring, its probably not a good time to be taking it.

The rate; ask Brandye. Okay you made a year. Withdrawal poor at best since it just takes one swimmer and the percentage of a swimmer reaching the egg if the pill fails. And yes, they do fail, consider your self fortunate since you are not looking at the STD issue as well.

And the rate for withdrawal alone is much higher than 95%--meaning only 5% become pregnant using this method. Please do not cite stats you have not medically studied formally since it does a disservice to all readers. Leave it for the medical people...PLEASE.

The maufacturers use the theoretical and controlled rates. I quote real life experience rates. The real life rates include the effects of missed pills, irregular pills, dietary changes, other medications, illness, supplements - all of which can affect the effectiveness of the pill.

those most likely aren't real statistics they put that up so they can't be sued, because if they had 100% effective and a girl came in and said she was pregnant on the pill they would be sued, and any scientific attempts to find a real percentage would give a lower percentage and they would sell less pills than another company that was just lazy and put the old fashion %99.9

just think of the toothpaste commercials, its always 9/10 dentists

What would you recommend for a typical college student who just wants to have sex? I for sure will always use a condom no matter what if I have sex. But I don't feel comfortable asking my partner if she takes the pill or not. So what can I do on my end to prevent pregnancy?

My guess is if I use a trojan condom and practice withdrawel before I ejaculate, I will cut down my chances a lot. Is this good practice or do you guys REALLY recommend I not have sex until I know the girl is on the pill?
