yes its safe to use different items to masturbate w/.
what is probably causing the pain is if you get something inside you too deep it can hit your cervix which will cause some pain or discomfort.
if my b/f and i get in a position where he's too deep inside me and hits my cervix it feels kind of like a pain in my lower abdomen. i can sometimes feel it in my lower back. so i just adjust myself and it doesn't hurt anymore.

Try a more flexible or smoother "object."

it's safe to use objects, but not too sharp. blunt pencils may be alrite. if you're not assure of the safety, juz rub your clit against soft things like bolsters etc...rubbing it along edge of tables or walls can feel great too!
if not, use shower head.
before sleeping, remove your pants. leave your panty on. it'll be even better if you have long nails. run your nails along your clit.
