A serious but long distance relationship is going to become not so long distance very soon. He informed me when we first started talking that he had gen. herpes. I love him A LOT and don't want to walk away so I need to know...1. Can I still get it even if he's not having an outbreak? 2. I love giving oral sex, what is the safest way for me to do that? I know I can use condoms, what about dental dams? Not sure what they are or where to buy them. 3. I've seen commercials for valtrex, does that stop the spreading of the disease or just take care of the outbreak? 4. Does anyone know of any informative websites on this topic? I've looked with no luck. Thank you!

Need facts about Gen. Herpes

OK, sorry, I'm really stupid, if I would have looked a little further on this website, I would have found the info I was looking for. DUH! :) I just read that if you're in a hot tub it can't be contracted? Is that true?? Feel free to leave me any more advice on this that you'd like! :)
Hot tub no you will not contract it since it's from direct contact & the hot tub should kill off viruses and bacteria with the chemicals in it.
Yes, you can contract the disease during a non-outbreak look through some sites about the stages of the disease.
Oral sex is a no go unless you use a condom. I would never put myself at potential risk unless this was man man whom I was married to. Dental dams? Stick with the condom.
Valtrex prevents "activation" of the disease; thus, keeping symptoms or outbreaks at bay. It will not stop you from getting the virus.
Look on the CDC website for info. Before you do anything, speak with a well informed (or two) doctors preferably those who treat STD's & infectious diseases.
Personally, I wouldn't risk having sex with him even if it was safer sex. This is of course unless you two are pretty serious. But if you two aren't very serious, I'd seriously reconsider having sexual activity with him regardless of whether you use safer sex methods or not.
