My period is driving me nuts!

This is a BC question:

I was taking Seasonale for about two years. (The pill where you only get your period 4 times a year.) In September I decided to switch BC pills to go on a monthly pill instead. I was experiencing side effects from the Seasonale and I was never able to go a full cycle (3 months) without getting my period or spotting in between, even after taking it for two years. My gyno said that some woman cannot delay their period that long, and that after two years there was little chance my body was going to adjust to the Seasonale fully. On Seasonale I was getting my period approximately every six weeks.

So for the last two months, I have been on Junel. This is a generic form of some other pill, I cannot remember the name. Anyhow - I am now on a regular 28 days cycle of pills. I am still experiencing problems with my period, now I have been getting it every 2 weeks. In two months, I have not been able to go a full 28 days without getting my period in between. This is not spotting either, this is a full 3-4 day bleed I am talking about.

This is driving me nuts. How long should it take for my body to readjust back to normal cycles? Should I be concerned and go back to the gyno, or just give it more time?

I discourage patients from Seasonale because I have had several fail to adjust. Same issues you are describing. Further, as they have switched to monthly cycle pills, the adjustment takes a while for many of them. The pill you are on is a fairly common generic mix with which few patients have had any difficulty except those coming off Seasonale. Some patients have taken up to a year to adjust.

Discuss this with your doctor. Your alternatives are to stick with it and hope your body adjusts sooner rather than later or switch to a non-hormonal form of protection. An IUD would be a good choice. Although the IUD commonly causes abnormal spotting for a month or two, your body would return to its normally regulated state sooner than with additional hormones in your system.

My experience puts Seasonale right up with Depo for messing up systems. I do prescribe when the patient really wants it.
