I'm new here. The message boards seem a bit quirky in so far as the post numbers (#1, #2 etc) for a thread don't seem to correspond to the order of date of posting. What I'd like to see is the first post at the top, and follow-ups listed underneath....

Hi,
Actually, the message board is new to us all. It was just upgraded to this very recently. The new feature it has though is these threaded topics, where you can reply to a middle post and have it be nested there instead of just tagging new replies to the bottom.
Really though, the only point I see to the post numbers at all is when you reply to a specific one like that and it'll say "reply to #5" or whatnot. Otherwise, I'd just ignore them. New posts regardless of where in the thread are flagged as new, so they're easy to find for new replies.
