Medications affect condom effectiveness???

Hey everyone. I just read somewhere that some medications can affect the effectiveness of a condom. Is that true? What can be done to avoid this effect?

I'm 99% sure you are wrong ... Condoms are an ""accessory"(for lack of a better word) and have nothing to do what goes on with your body when taking medication,,,

Can you post a link to the article you read?
If it's not on the Web, would you mind posting the relevant part?

It's an article on this website. Here is the link:

http://www.sexinfo101.com/bc_mcondom.shtml

And I will quote the relevant portion:
Oil-based lubricants such as petroleum jelly, edible oils and medications weaken latex condoms. If you wish to use lubricants during sex play make sure they are water based, such as Astro Glide.
Am I just reading this wrong and it is saying that topical medications can weaken the condom?

Well one would think that if you needed to apply a medication like that inside the vagina or on the penis you wouldn't be having sex until what has caused it to clear and you no longer needed to apply it.. Well that would be the common sense option..:D

I think you may find it is BCP's that are effected by certain medications rather then Condom's

Yeah I knew that but I read somewhere that condoms are affected by certain medications as well.

Yeah you would think. lol... But the way that article was phrased kind of threw me. Was I just reading it wrong?

Chemistry 101 - Like dissolves like. Condoms are an oil based material, and exposing them to things that are also oil based such as vaseline, massage oils, or a medicated cream where the medication is suspended inside of an oil based cream like vaseline will result in the condom deteriorating and becoming more likely to break due to this weakening.

Heat and sunlight also cause latex to deteriorate, which is why most brands sell them stored inside of foil pouches and people shouldn't keep them in their glove box or wallet.

What a mess following spicygirl still sounding like a child.

Latex condoms are vegetable - latex is the sap of the rubber tree. Mineral based lube, such as vaseline, will weaken latex in the thin sheet that forms a condom. Other vegetable oils can have similar affect. Water based lube will not affect latex. The poly cvondoms are not affected by any commonly used lube.

Topical medications would have to be on the relevant body parts to affect the condom. If applied elsewhere there isn't a problem.
