Many in Senate Back Mandatory HPV Vaccination
Nearly half of the Maryland Senate has signed onto legislation introduced yesterday to mandate that middle school girls receive a new vaccine for cervical cancer.

Maryland would help lead a nationwide effort to require that young adolescents receive the vaccine, which guards against the common, sexually transmitted virus at the root of one of the deadliest cancers to afflict women. The federal government approved the vaccine for human papillomavirus, or HPV, seven months ago.

I support mandatory HPV vaccines for teenagers. I'd personally like to get the vaccine myself but I don't know if Medicaid covers it or not.

They should Ladybug. If not look for Planned parenthood or a Gyn clinic; or go to you local BOH Department in your County. Go on-line to the County's website---look up medical & STD care find the phone number & call them, ASAP. The state of Maryland was the first to have open, free vaccination clinics through initiated through a joint of the State & John's Hopkins University....

I will try that tomorrow Sera. Thank you. I can't today because the offices are already closed.
OK, everytime I hear about this HPV vaccine it only mentions women and cervical cancer. I am not a woman and don't have a cervix, so does that mean I'm sore out of luck? Because I would rather not get HPV. Where's my vaccine?
I believe it's still in the trials...as women married for 40 years and now divorcing, never exposed, perhaps denying them is similar to your thoughts...I do know extending the vaccination is being determined...

Thanks sera - so basically the one available now is only for women? Why doesn't it work for guys as well? I've been tested and have nothing so I'd like to get vaccinated so I have one less thing to worry about... The one for men is coming eventually, right?

Are there any other vaccines for STDs out there, or is this the only one that can be prevented? I'm not in the know on medical science...

in the pamphlet they gave me when i got my shot, they said men can get it too, its just targeted more heavily towards women.

and for the record, i think its wrong to force the shot upon people who dont want it, or cant use it.

Polio & MMR's are mandatory. The remainder is of debate alone since it's not a mandatory vaccination. If some wish to expose themselves to HVP; they simply pay they consequences of possible cervical cancer; or giving it to other partners; I guess that's fair in life for some. Cancer & disease spread? I assume some are happy to have diseases then feel life was unfair to them in someway. I doubt it's of concern to you since you have already engaged in vaginal penetration and not a ideal participant (too late for you) & non issue for you. For those not at risk, let them make an informed choice about their care; ignorance is presented in many forms.

I know that I've had sex before, but if I've been tested and am clean wouldn't I still be a candidate?

Not sure why anyone wouldn't want this to be mandatory - fear of needles or wanting to "live life on the edge", perhaps? Damn, I can't imagine someone complaining about NOT getting an STD...

Damn, I can't imagine someone complaining about NOT getting an STD...
They are exploring ranges for the vaccination; the FDA has a limited approval for the med/vaccination. I do know some docs who do use it. Some people I guess rather risk Cervical cancer then the potential effects of the vaccination, or prefer to just be controversial. on topics. Similarly there was the Lyme's vaccinations which was pulled by the FDA & later deemed unsafe. My nieces WILL be vaccinated...I'd rather them skip the Chickenpox vaccinations...

Thanks sera. Very helpful and informative! I'd add to your rep but apparently I need to "spread it around" a little more first...

One more question - are any of the side effects of the vaccine severe? And the way I understand it, a vaccine is just a weaker version of the actual disease - so is there any possibilty that I would actually contract HPV by getting this vaccine?

Some docs are using it beyond the recommended "parameters" I cannot see why it would be harmful; perhaps Brandye can tell you more...

If you have not had it or had even one strain, I would think logically it would stop the other three....Biggest complaint is injection site reactions.

not sure if that first part was directed towards me- i already had all three injections BEFORE i lost my virginity...i was just pointing out that in some women who have already been exposed to or already have cervical cancer, the shot can be HARMFUL.

...and yes at the injection site you get a hard "lump" that is very tender and sore...and it takes a few months to go away

Big damned deal, an injection site reaction...you can get the same from DT; difference of a golf ball on your arm or cervical cancer treatment....this is a no brainer...stop being paranoid. I am merely point out to Oedi the facts and the extended uses...

and i was merely agreeing and offering my experience. god, everybody calm down and back up :\
and i was merely agreeing and offering my experience. god, everybody calm down and back up :\
YOU need to calm down; stating your opinion is one thing as is sharing your experiences. Which outweighs the facts/benefits?

Discomfort at the site [which you did not state originally] when you received it ever see another go through the treatment for cervical cancer? Ever watch someone die from it? That in it's self will cause people to flock for the vaccination.

Calm down? I am calm & pointing out the salient issues which many never view. I believe you have it backwards [stating my post perhaps was targeted at you] that is sheer paranoia. Everyone has a idea, but to insinuate it's not for women w/cervical cancer IS a known fact--demonstrated on advertisements.

You could have hit your point & answered Oedi about what you know about it and shared "I had it but found an injection site [localized reaction]" if this was your true intent.

Write what you say and mean what you say....best approach to such issues. It sounds as if you are ,sorry on this point "sniveling over a lump". You did not state you had it [the injections] and here were the effects you found but posted under "why it should NOT be mandatory by state". Stop backing your posts with victimization.

Think about it you had it & you are one of the fortunate ones to have received it.

My statements are factual as far as the Medical, covert, stretch mechanisms...who DOES actually receive it, which fall out of the FDA guidelines, and why. For docs to do this there is a cause and a belief this is an answer for many.

Those with cervical cancer are already/immediately denied & disqualified by doctors...

Calm down? I am calling you bluff and fluff statement, something I do for a living. I find unique you had them but have this impending death wish, perhaps you enjoy the attention. Or wish just to challenge everyone on the board who has a doom/gloom mentality. Like gore? Let me take you to the morgue [watch an autopsy on some one who died tragically] or to a trauma & watch a traumatic amputation of a limb or better yet a GSW to the head with the person alive--eye balls falling out. Want to see an OD? Young girls who had a b/f break up with them. Heck go rent "Anatomy of an Autopsy" by M. Baden...worked on him in multiple cases he is a genius. Now there is a profession! Never a dull moment and the mind has to be engaged always! Note he was just pulled in on the Peterson case 4th wife, 2 dead?? Had a thing for the younger women....

Sorry Oedi; I hope you see the issues for potential benefits and the current covert use of the injection in the US. And the risks health care providers will go to in order to ensure manys health!!!

"YOU need to calm down; stating your opinion is one thing as is sharing your experiences. Which outweighs the facts/benefits? "

-

"Discomfort at the site [which you did not state originally] when you received it ever see another go through the treatment for cervical cancer? "

-[COLOR="Red">i was bringing up the "discomfort at the site" on a seperate note just to expand on the comment you made about it being the most common complaint-NOT as a REASON not to get it-..but i figured i could post it in the same post so as not to double post...apparently i was wrong to think that...

"That in it's self will cause people to flock for the vaccination.Everyone has a idea, but to insinuate it's not for women w/cervical cancer IS a known fact--demonstrated on advertisements."

-[COLOR="Red">i'll make my opinion more clear here: it is a good idea in theory to have this shot mandadorty, but not everyone can afford healthcare (or the $90 per shot for that matter), and not everyone gets physicals/pap smears. not everyone knows their status. so how exactly would we go about deciding who gets forced to have the shot and who would be harmed by it? that is the main reason why i do not think it should be mandatory, but rather more promoted/publicized and perhaps offered for a lower price (or at least be covered by insurance companies) which again, is just my OPINION

"I believe you have it backwards [stating my post perhaps was targeted at you] that is sheer paranoia."

-[COLOR="Red">honestly i was not sure who you were referring to when you said "I doubt it's of concern to you since you have already engaged in vaginal penetration and not a ideal participant (too late for you) & non issue for you." hence the "not sure if that was directed at me" at the beginning of my post.

"Like gore? Let me take you to the morgue [watch an autopsy on some one who died tragically] or to a trauma & watch a traumatic amputation of a limb..."

-[COLOR="Red">not sure what this has to do with anything or where you are going with this. all i will say to that is the illegal videos from the middle east are available on certain underground websites and they are far more interesting...though most sites get shut down fairly quickly so you have to keep up with them.
