Laptop Causing Infertility?

I know that studies show that using a laptop on your lap can cause infertility.

Actually, the study shows it increases temperature by about 5 degrees on average, and a temperature increase of just one degree can cause limited sperm production, so I can put two and two together.

My question is whether or not this infertility is long- or short-term. If it limits sperm production, does that mean that if I stop using the laptop on my lap when trying to conceive with my wife, that my body will return to regular sperm production?

Thanks for the help.

Wow! Thanks -whittyphrasehere- and GuruGuy!! Both have helped tremendously.

PS. -whiityphrasehere-, you really impressed with the research and it helps a lot to make me feel a lot safer when using my laptop. I'm going out to buy a laptop cooling pad for use when its on my lap. Thanks a lot!

Never heard of this, but if a few degrees make that much of a difference, wouldn't hot showers have sterilized the male population already?

No - it is based on use of a hot laptop for an hour or longer of use, which makes sense as I don't take showers or stay in a hot tub for any more than a half hour.

That's why it's always sitting on my desk...

I'll shower for as long as the hot water lasts, haha!

Are you serious...I hope its temporary...I mean I am on my computer 4 hours at a time for school and its a laptop...and I dont have a desk...

Oh man...

Well, I don't particularly want children anyway, but this could be an issue for others.

I doubt it since more men would be infertile. Perhaps that's why I [as a woman] cannot have kids, lOL! Ask your urologist.

I've heard that all the extra electromagnetic pulses around most of us can be harmful to a degree, but never heard that. In most cases they affect your mind more, coming from a guy who's computer is near the TV, game console, fuse box and another computer. It's supposed to increase frequency and intensity of headaches after long term exposure.

Haha like be kind rewind!

I don't believe a word of this. What about the sauna? Or hot tubs? Or 100+ degree weather?

Did a bit of reading on this. Like many subjects in medical science;
More research is needed.

Here's a bit of evidence supporting the claim;
Pasche said a much larger concern involves laptop heat emissions and “a decrease in spermatogenesis,” or the production of healthy male sperm... The study found that “significant but reversible changes” in sperm production resulted from short-term laptop use. However, using a laptop often day after day doesn’t give the body a chance to recover from heat exposures, and “may cause irreversible or partially reversible changes in male reproductive function," the study said...
That does explain why infertility rates aren't coincidently high with such inventions as showers, hot tubs and saunas. I doubt a majority of people spend more than a couple of minutes in a shower and uses saunas or hot tubs on a daily basis.

The article goes on to mention that it's fine to use a laptop on the boys, but put it on some other surface to give the boys a chance to recover.

To answer your question directly ragingbull1, I would stop placing your laptop on your lap while you are trying to concieve to increase your chances of rallying more men for the expedition. Your body should be able to recover from any prolonged laptop use a few days after doing such.

Hi RagingBull. Generally the advice is not just to avoid laptops if you are trying to maintain high fertility, but anything that keeps sustained high temperatures down there. Loose trousers instead of tight ones, boxer shorts instead of y-fronts, even avoiding overheating on long car journeys!

Your testicles are deliberately outside your body because sperm need to be cooler than the rest of your body to work well. But the good news is that most of this is temporary, as the previous poster mentioned.

kind of a scary thought since im in a long distance relationship and when were not together we use msn almost every night...
...probably doesnt help that im a bit lazy and like to lie on the sofa with my laptop rather than just using my desktop :S

Why CL, are you trying to get her pregnant?

Can this affect women too? I spend about 2 hours a day on my laptop (addicted to music, so download tons!), and I usually have it on my lap while in bed. I do have a desktop, but I don't use it, just kinda sits there.

Glad to be of service.

Nah, you're fine.
Testicles need to be cooler than normal body temperature to produce sperm, (hence the dangling) while eggs can develop at regular body temperature. Since the boys are outside, they are more susceptible to the weather or some unexpected blow.

For any guys worrying about their boys, just start wearing a lead cup...might be a little uncomfortable, but hey you can always get the LARGER size...

Thank you witty!

If you are trying to get her pregnant, then no, don't use the laptop on your lap, do wear the boxers instead of briefs, do avoid hot tubs, etc.
