While we were little, everything we experienced in daily life was incorporated in us playing together; including what we heard at school or saw on the news or what adults talked about that we happened to hear. I guess it was our way of putting all the information in another perspective; one that always included humor. So we played falling in love, going to school, getting a job, having a fight, playing doctor or dentist and patient, playing running-away from home, pretending losing our parents. the play could also include: sexy dancing and stripping, kissing, pretending to make love, pretending someone was on drugs, pretending to be an alcoholic, pretending to beat eachother into the hospital, etc (yes, all based simply on what we got to see and hear around us). We mostly did this while playing with dolls, but on occasion physically together while we'd play roles and we made up characters with history and all. The playing was followed by lots of giggling :) It was real-world-input mixed up with fairytales all together in our own fantasyworld. I remember I was the first to put boundaries to this play, when she kissed me with tongue (she was only about 6 by than). In my opinion, nothing was ever "for real". It was always a role and a play, all fun and games. I loved her and still do, but never in a sexual way.

I think it is ALWAYS wrong when there's forced behavior. When we're talking kids "playing", it should be considered carefully whether this is innocent child's play or there is a disturbed little child taking advantage of another.
Although I do realize the possibility of innocent play (like between me and my sister), I also know that it is not always like that. I have been attacked sexually twice as a child (not incest). First time while I was in kindergarten by children a few years older than I was. They stripped me and held both my arms and legs pressed to the ground as they took turns "investigating", while I screamed like murder. Children? Innocent play? The teacher (that didn't even see it happening too busy with her coffe!) put it this way at the time (after my mom had come to school furious!). But it sure as hell was not innocent! Seconded on the creepy side. I'm also not trying to split hairs on the whole adopted vs step-siblings vs blood lines side. I see this as more of a family respect thing.
For example, I now have a step-sister (since we were both adults of 21 and 24) whom would be a totally acceptable "biologically" sex partner. But I have bonded to her as a sister, and couldn't think of her like that now.

I agree. I had a dream once where I was having sex with my sister which wasn't erotic at all. And although I barely remember it, thinking about it makes my skin crawl.
I can't understand why a person would willingly have sex with a family member.It is very sick and creepy to me.I was molested by my uncle for almost 8 years from age 8.He is 5 years older than me,and he started it while babysitting one night.I didn't like it,I tried to avoid him as much as I could and have been traumatised by these events for the rest of my life.It all came back to me when my ex husband tried to force our twin children to commit incest together,and my son told me and I put a stop to it by evicting my husband from the house and reporting him to Child Protection.It is abuse of trust and a power trip for those who exert control.It just disgusts me to be honest

Perhaps I'm very open-minded. Then again: in the Netherlands you can freely marry someone in your own family, except within the primary bloodline of parents/children and brothers/sisters. No need to explain that no child can have defense against those who raised him. The primary logical objection to siblings is when having children, it could more easily lead to genetic abnormalities thus deceased babies. Lacking the blood-bond, it is why adopted siblings can apply for permission to marry. This is more like a formality than it is ever refused. Unless there has been a legal adoption, step-children can marry just like the next man and woman (or man-man, woman-woman :)).
Well let's see, RR. There are poisonous spiders and then spiders don't brush their mandables and thus can transmit flesheating viruses (amongst others) even if they themselves aren't poisonous. Spider bite on your finger = lose an arm. So what's to fear you ask? LOTS.
The two strongest world-wide taboos are incest and cannibalism. This means thay aren't there just because of culture. Kuru is reason enough to not be a cannibal. Violation of familial trust is reason enough to not commit incest.
Just because a response is visceral doesn't mean it is wrong.
I became interested in this thread at Perez' post coupled with his post in "fantasies." There is a reason for his sister being virgin in her forties and the two of you should talk about why. You may be surprised in her answer. There are those who avoid sex because somehow other men do not measure up to the ideals of those in the nuclear family.
For most of the history of the field of anthropology it was believed that the closest thing to universal was the incest taboo. One twentieth century text even said "if you ask ten anthropologists for universals, nine would say the incest taboo." Today that is being rethought. Data to the contrary are being accumulated sufficiently to bring it into question. For instance, there are pre-literate tribes who do not allow marriage within the tribe but arrange marriages with nearby, even competing, tribes. Appears to be a taboo but now much pre-marital hanky-panky is being documented within those tribes - often between siblings - prior to the arrangements. It seems to be kept within the family as to not reduce the dowry value of a virgin bride.
Another side to this is that western anthropologists were attributing knwledge to these tribes they actually lack. The purpose of marrying outside the tribe is not to reduce the chances of birth anomalies as these tribes would attribute abnormalities to evil spirits or some such. The purpose is to reduce conflict among nearby tribes. War is much less likely when tribal elders share grandchildren even with tribes competing for resources. Some researchers are going so far as to say the opposite of popular wisdom and stating that incest is almost universal rather than its' taboo.
In more polite society, incest has been difficult to measure partly because the definition is so slippery. The Judaic position is that first cousins are all right for marriage; much of the Islamic and Christian worlds include these as taboo. There is even one American state in which civil law forbids marriage between first cousins but Jews are specifically excluded from that prohibition.
I did a brief online search and found very little on sibling incest and almost nothing, except for a few anecdotal reports on "adult sibling incest." Most of the research jumps immediately into criminal incest along the lines of lecherous uncles, step-fathers, much older brothers and such in which force was an issue. One article stated that this usually begins with the girl between 8 and 12 and the man much older. A stereotype we are almost taught in the civilized world.
Our view of birth anomalies is also a bit twisted. European royalty, especially the Habsburgs, did not have problems because of single incestuous relationships; they had problems because the pattern was repeated over several generations allowing the recessive genes to run wild. Similarly, some island populations such as the Frisian Islanders off the former coast of Holland in the North Sea tended to develop reduced gene pools because of isolation. Some mountain folk have fallen into this trap, as well.
A brother and a sister mating will have about the same chance of abnormalities in offspring as a forty plus year old woman becoming pregnant with an unrelated spouse. I do know a fifty year old "couple" (sister and brother) who were each married, each well educated in different countries, each very successful in business in different fields and each with one child from their previous marriages. As their parents aged, the family business was in trouble. They each moved back to the family manor in southern Europe and put all their efforts into recovering (very successfully) the family business. They each had to travel widely, spent limited time at home and were quite isolated then. A sexual relationship developed and they are both quite satisfied with their lives. It is most likely that they will "grow old together."
Perez' feelings towards his sister are not that uncommon from the psychological literature. We really do not know how these feelings are acted upon. Older brother, younger sister is the stereotype and is seen as evil (I agree). Brother and sister in their forties? I cannot condemn that.
In the interest of full disclosure, I have never seen either my brother (younger) or sister (older) in a sexual light, nor can I imagine it. The summer I was fifteen I spent six weeks at my grandparents estate in Germany along with a similarly aged male first cousin. Once we discovered the "sex section" of my grandparents extensive medical library, we did set out to practice what we were reading. He and I joke, privately, about that today but there is still some spark on both sides.
If she's having penetrative sex with her siblings, she's not a virgin, and I'm quite sure that no one's telling any anthropolgists more than they want said anthropologists to know. So we do not know that incest is NOT taboo.
What we see from experiments is that closely related persons will shun eachother when it comes to sex. Those famous 'smell the sweat' tests you will remember.
And if the society is closed - such as with some of the Amish - the effects of too being too closely related have profoundly bad effects.
So why even 'go there' when you have so many other choices available?
I am not arguing for incest, EEK, and you touch upon a key research weakness in studying non-forced relations especially between consenting adults: No one wants to talk about it. You point out that we do not know that the taboo is violated; similarly, we do not know that the taboo is not violated.
Certainly, with a choice, most us would choose outside the consanguinity relationship. Or at least that is what most of us say publicly. I would like to see (and am too rushed to do the research) some real studies of adult sibling incest. My guess is we, living more traditionally, would be surprised. The psychological and anthropological studies are not there, as far as I know (not my field), but look at the field of literature beginning, I guess, with Oedipus and we find many writings that deal with it. And, not a few famous authors who admit to incest. That is one window into personal lives and I, for one, would like to see other windows opened without the judgmental dimension of adult-child added.
There have been studies done at Stanford bringing blood related people (brothers, sisters, mother, fathers) together who were separated at birth through adoption. The level of sexual attraction reported was very high. The studies do not include acting on that attraction.
I do not want to "do it;" I want to know what we are hiding from ourselves. Nothing that Perez said indicates that they had acted upon the fantasies that he holds and he had not had sex with his older sister.
Not my field either but from what research I have seen and the history and medicine we do know, I'd still be willing to bet on incest being more taboo than not or, as in the case of Egypt, reserved for the 'dynasty' or the 'demi-god'.
And there's another item we haven't mentioned. Clothru, one of my ancestors, at or around 150 BCE had sex with all three of her brothers, had a child from them and then had sex with her son and had a child by him - so the story goes. Whether true or not it certainly was talked about and the story passed down. Some of these stories have turned out to have some truth to them that is 'based in reality to a certain degree".
Why would anyone talk about something that was common given the human love of scandal? And if it were scandalous, that would mean, logically, that incest was not 'acceptable' in that society.

I don't like it. But I also have a hard time putting my finger on why. As BRandye says, the chance for abnormalities is low with only a single incestuous generation. And we as a society do not prevent any other high-risk group from reproducing. It is not illegal for two people carrying known genetic disorders to marry and have children. Just irresponsible. It seems to be a modern excuse for our evolved "ick factor" to shun genetic matierial that is too close, and it also fails to cover homosexual incest.
Inter-generational incest is a bad thing, imho; because of the authority the older person over the younger. The same reason teacher/pupil is frowned upon, they are seen to be a guiding force and to use that authority to create a sexual relationship can teach confusing messages and be seen as abusive.
This is slightly more tenuous and based solely on personal feeling; but I also feel that since the bond we have with siblings is USUALLY sufficient to prevent us desiring them, a failure of that system could point to a problem in either the family or one of the individuals involved.
But when it comes to cousins I have a hard time creating an argument beyond "it's icky".
It might also be that knowing our brothers, uncles, cousins, etc. - we mentally bring up their images in our minds, imagine sex with any of them and go EEEEEEWWWW!

I have mixed thoughts about incest. Yes, in most cultures it is highly taboo and even illegal.
But, if God created Adam and Eve and they had two sons (one of whom murdered the other) then where did we all come from?
As interesting is tracking our ancestry: take a sheet of paper, place a dot in the center along the top edge, place two on either side below that, then another set of two adjacent, and so on and on. Eventually with enough dots you will end up with more people back in history than there are today.
