HIV Question...

So I was recently out at dinner with a couple friends and a new acquaintance. He told us that he has HIV, but that he caught it early enough so that he got on really good medication and now it's basically in remission. And also that he can't transmit it sexually.

This sounds completely false to me. But maybe I'm just misinformed?

Once you have HIV, can it go into so far into remission that you can't transmit it?

Out of my area of expertise. Here is a common surgeon's response: Once HIV is contracted, you have it and it can be passed on. There have been people on various drug regimens who no longer test positive but in whom HIV could return if the medications were withheld. Perhaps his level of infection does not register and perhaps his doctor has told him he is no longer infectious. I would not volunteer to be the test partner to prove he is not still an active carrier.
