Why is it that so many times health insurance will not cover birth control? I find it ridiculous that so many health insurance companies will not cover it. I mean, come on, birth control is just as essential to whether a woman is healthy or not as other medical items are. Can you imagine the stress of having to worry about having an unwanted pregnancy? Can you imagine what that stress would do to your health? And what about if you actually got pregnant? Pregnancy in itself has many health risks involved.

Health Insurance and Birth Control

Insurance companies have not covered BC for years, nothing new. Their view is it is not medically necessary since you can purchase methods over the counter.
It's annoying right? lol
My insurance covers a little of it.
The pill I am on costs about $48 and my copay for it is $30.
It was nice when I was getting my pills from the student health center at my college (before I had a job and insurance lol)..there I only paid $10 a pack =\
What makes it more annoying is that they'll sometimes pay on Viagra but not BC?!?
it's not fair about that they shouldn't pay out for viagra because it isn't much to do with keeping a guys health where as it does with a bc i think that thier priorotys may be quite a bit messed up after all i doubt they want to be paying oout for more abortions so why wont they pay out for the pill?
Insurance will not cover a TOP unless the doctor puts it in as medically necessary...you can also ask your physician to do this to get BCP's covered. If they are necessary to regulate your cycle or to prevent ovarian cysts, they will be covered. Viagra is covered b/c it's necessary for an erection (normal sexual function) and there is no similar over the counter medication which can be substituted. I worked in Quality Management for a few years, had to get "stuff" approved for patients...so know the process well. It's bad when they do not cover a hospital bed nor wheelchair for a patient who desperately needs it! I used to get people approved for their hospital stays despite it being an emergency, that is sad!
I think that it is just rediculous. I had health care coverage for years that provided my birth control pills. Then just about 2 months ago they dropped it completely! It came as a shock to me. I couldn't believe that they would take that away knowing that pregnancy is at such a high rate and that women all over are having unexpected pregnancies because they no longer can use birthcontrol because they can not pay for it. Also condoms and other forms of birthcontrol don't always work. The government really needs to re think this action. It is getting worse and then they complain about women having too many kids that they can not pay for. Well why do they think that is happening? Not because they aren't trying to protect themselves, but because THEY DON"T HAVE THE PILL or w/e they used before. It's outrageous!
It's not government...it's the insurance companies. Requesting government to step in and to regulate insurance companies is what is needed. Writing to your elected officials is a place to begin.
As bad as every citizen of every country thinks their health system is, I am so glad that I am in Europe every time I hear a discussion of the rather cumbersome procedures in the States.
Erm...condoms are so godamn expensive, like $10+ a pack, imagine if you're in a stable relationship, having sex 3-5 times a week, using a condom each time. Condoms should be covered or at least available to those who need/want.
Some sex clinics give away free condoms, but at high schools you have to pay a buck a piece!
Oh well...I got lucky, my IUD was supposed to be at least $300 but it was covered by a new government policy. Yay me.

jeeze i live in the US, and my insurance covers my birth control...my copay is $5

Consider yourself very fortunate! Most will only cover if there is a medical need...hormonal regulation or ovarian cyst history!
