Yes a lot of people go through that. Nervousness and tensing will contribute to that. Once you are relaxed and comfortable with the thought and feeling of being with someone sexually, it usually goes a lot smoother as you say. The simple fact that they are losing their virginity tells you they will be tight unless they have masturbated alot or had a lot of oral/fingering.
