Google Plus is that companies foray into the social media market. Something like this was one of their goals when acquiring other services such as Youtube a few years ago. They're basically trying to more seamlessly integrate things such as youtube, google docs, web cam services, cloud storage services, instant messangers, and myspace/facebook/linkedin together. The major selling point is that their privacy features are based on designated social circles like work, athletics, family, personal, etc and they don't automatically connect to each other like facebook would.
I don't know, however, why someone would need that particular link as you only need a google account, which has been readily available through google docs or email for quite a while. Maybe the link is for people to share for a beta account like gmail had its invite system so many years ago, but as far as I know it wouldn't be needed anymore. |

I'm not sure what is required to join now but when google+ plus first opened you needed to be referred by someone else. This is similar to when Facebook first started you needed a college email because it was originally for college students. This link appears to be that invitation link which is needed, but i can't tell on my phone. Short answer to what fun said it is basically google's version of Facebook, but with all of their programs and tools.

that link is an invite to google plus as far as i am aware since it is still an invite only service. the big reason to try google+ is that it does integrate with all the other services Google offers. It is mostly for those who like to try new things and like to see seamless integration between web-sights.
and DD2 i promise you the link is not harmful, here is an article about it from tech crunch which is a reputable site Google+ Project: It's Social, It's Bold, It's Fun, And It Looks Good ? Now For The Hard Part | TechCrunch also do i seem like the user who would try to hack/spam you?

Oops. My google accounts apparently already had unused invites from long ago so the main page skipped past the trial invite system message and went directly to the start that said all you need is your normal google login. It is still in trial and they've filled their invite quota for the time being.
