Question Petnames for guys...

Okay I know that traditionally/stereotypically not many guys seem to be into petnames, but my current boyfriend loves em. Nothing cutesie like "honey buns" or "sugar cakes" but simple ones. The one I use often is "darling". The thing is that that is my term of endearment for my closest friends, so to me it's wierd to only call him that. It just doesn't feel right. I've had to catch myself from saying "sweetheart" a couple times, its what I naturally go for. I'm wondering, is that too close to the cutesie ones? If you are a guy who likes when your girl comes up with a special name please don't be afraid to post. A lot of my girls are having the same issue

I recently had a gf who called me cutie. while I don't usually go for the cutesie names either, I liked it because I liked her and that's what she called me, it sounded sweet in her voice and I liked when she'd even text, "good morning cutie"

my previous gf called me stud which was a nice petname, but not always appropriate when out in public somewhere.

find a name that makes you think of him that isn't too overly cutesie and let him know that's how you feel and he'll probably like it because it's from you.

My husband and I have always used "baby". When my sister and her husband were dating in college, they used "nerd". Perhaps simply "sweetie" or "honey" or even "hun". Ask him how he feels about it.

Don't over think it though. You shouldn't have to remember which word you're supposed to call him, it should just flow naturally. If "sweetheart" naturally flows out, let it go and see how he reacts. I'm betting it will be as HT suggests.

Play on names are good as are plays on personality or plays reflecting obvious physical characteristics but in reverse.

For example: if his name is Benjamin - you could use Benjaminnow esp. if he's one huge guy.

PolarBear is a good name for a gray-haired fellow. In fact, anything that includes 'bear' is good.

"Ursus Cantankerous" is my husband's petname but we're intellectual.

But if you can't come up w something - don't worry - DARLING always works well.

Hey! Babe...

"Babe" is OK with me; although, "Baby" for me is like nails on a chalkboard. (I am MAN, not my partner's baby.)

More important for me is wishing for all my life that I had been given a nickname back in grammar school that stuck.

"Hon" is another term of endearment that seems coarse to my ears.

This reminds me of a song in which the advice to girls was "Call him 'Superman,' 'Honey Lamb,' 'Lover Boy.' The point of the song was that this was safer than accidentally blurting out the wrong name in a moment of passion.
