My first thought was to say that the notion of privacy came out of the Puritan Ethic, and John Calvin, however, the practice of privacy and indecent exposure goes back in time much much further and for the most part is cross cultural among "advanced" societies. In tribal cultures around the world, you will not see this vanity. Please keep in mind that it was not too many years ago that men were seen at the beach wearing undershirts and long trousers! Covering a woman's breasts goes all the way back to Adam and Eve and is discussed in Genesis.
In at least one Indian tribal culture, intercourse was consummated via a hole in each person's blanket. (Who knows what a man and woman wore or did not wear under the blanket. The point being that nudity was frowned upon.) "Intimacy" varies somewhat by culture and religious belief. Some Muslims believe that women should cover most of their body, especially the hair, shoulders, and neck. In addition, other body areas such as the male and female buttocks, genitals, breasts, nipples, legs, and arms, also. Regardless of where in the world you are, modesty and chastity abide. > Why is a womans breast considered a "private part"? Most likely to keep men from becoming aroused, acting on impulse, taking matters into their own hands (pun, if any intended) yet at the same time, permitting the imagination to run wild. A contradiction? No doubt. Welcome to the SI101 Board and its Forums. I hope you will enjoy participating. Please begin by familiarizing yourself with the FAQs, the Posting Guidelines section, and especially the Index, all found at the top of the main screen. The Index contains links to helpful informative insightful, as well as how-to articles that discuss the most common questions and concerns people ask about. In addition, if you click on the site's Home page you will find even more information. Thanks for the thought-provoking question. Last edited by dancingdoc2; 06-12-2010 at 07:29 AM.. |

Breasts are "private" because they symbolize femininity and for obvious reasons, we all began our lives suckling at the breast and we associate the breast with sexuality (just think of all th art and sculpture where the breast is the focus).

And a potentially dangerous one... You could cover yourself up completely, but then it gets even more interesting to know what's underneath. A thing you could use in 'innocent' play It could also cause discomfort. Personally, I don't really think it's about how much 'skin' you're showing... You can feel very selfconscious wearing a bathing suite on the beach, a summerdress while shopping or even at a business meeting in formal clothing. Eyes that look up and down your body, that are constantly evaluating you... In extreme situations, in the 'war' against temptation, it could even lead to women being locked up, because they would be a too great temptation for men... Sadly, history and even the history made today tells more than one story about this... (and perhaps some men have fallen victim as well). Really, such a shame... Our bodies are our most beautiful gift!So far, there's one place I know where these eyes aren't staring: the sauna. Everyone is completely naked, but no-one acts or looks at you that way. No-one is being judged by the way they look. It creates a very comfortable and relaxing atmosphere. Gives such a 'free' feeling. And if anyone tries to disturb this 'Eden', (s)he's most certainly thrown out and told never to return! Off course, I wouldn't spend my life in a sauna, also because I do enjoy my sexuality and love to act upon that aspect of my body as well! Thing is: people who go to a sauna have to understand that 'naked' or 'skin' does not equals 'sex'. So 'skin' does not necessarily mean 'temptation'. The meaning of 'skin' all depends on the time, the place, the expression on his/her face, body-language, etc... I think if more people would get themselves to really believe this and act upon it, then there would be a lot less trouble in the world ![]()
