aging,eccentricity and irascibility

I'll be 49 soon. How long until I can be considered an old codger? One of my remaining goals in life is to become a curmudgeon. Is there a natural progression from codgerhood to curmudgeony or are they completely different states of disgruntlement? I am also very interested in being a coot. One always hears about old coots. Is there an age requirement, can one not be a middle aged coot?

Well, I am just a few years older and it seems the labels or states of being for women are a tad different. My guess is that your friends and family will let you know as each barrier is crossed, first subtly and then in exasperation. No, you cannot be a middle aged coot; either an old coot or not a coot at all.

According to the urban dictionary, I can never be a coot! Damned sexist language this is.
