It all stems from the fragile male ego - yes, really. They always want to be assured that the children they are working to raise, and spending their resources on, are THEIR children and not some other man's. To be fair about this, women also want to know that ALL of their man's resources are being spent on HER children so she wants him, or his paycheck, all to herself.
There is twist to the woman's point of view however, since she can only have so many kids - she wants x's resources but she may want y's genetics. So, for women it makes biological sense to get pregnant by the best genes and then secure the best provider - which may involve more than one man.
Not so important for men since they can have lots of kids assuming they can secure lots of women and they're not terribly interested in raising any of them.
But biologically you're not successful until you're a grandparent - when your kids have their kids. And so on down the line.
That's the theory at any rate.
