Ignore all these people, honestly. They all almost without exception probably have some college degree in some field that they didn't put a huge amount of thought into and now have fallen into a job that they are calling a career (if they're lucky).

Decide what you do in school based on what you're willing to do as a career, and what you're willing to do as a career should be at least 45% based on how much money you want to be earning. "I want to be comfortable" is not a good answer to tell yourself.

An arts degree is almost utterly useless and will get you no career.

The best things you can expect from college are things that require professional college - Dentists, Veterinarians, Doctors, Lawyers, Geologists, Engineers, Nurses (the high end ones make better money than all but the top 10% of lawyers) and then maybe Accountants.

Other than these you could still argue that you weren't wasting your time by trying to get Kinesiology (if you are serious about doing personal training), or maybe social work (but only if you really want to work with messed up people and get happiness from this).

Other than this its all pretty much a waste of time and money (there are a few things here and there that are good if you actually complete your program - actuarial studies, pure math, research grade science etc).

BS.

If a BA is useless, is a BSc useless? Is a BAppSc useless?

A BA is a fantastic degree -- just like a BSc or BAppSc but for some reason cops a heap of stick unlike the other two. The only difference is that BAs are for people undecided about where they are heading, but are strong or have an interest in humanities. This is the exact same for a BSc except with this, the undecided individual is strong or has an interest in science; albeit 'soft' science. And with a BAppSc the interest in in 'hard' science.

BA's can give individuals a qualification in fields from Anthropology to Psychology and everything in between.

But once again my advice on the topic.. you are going to spend the next ~40 years working. Choose something you can still do at ~60; and will still enjoy, or think you will enjoy, after 40 years. Something you have a passion for. Even if it doesnt apparantly pay well, if you have a passion for it.. you will well and truely get by.

Actually quite a few of the members are extremely successful in their careers, have their own businesses and use the forum to help others. Whatever cynical outlook you have, try using a handle other than "CrackBaby" when attempting to be taken seriously discussing the significance of various degrees.

No degree is useless. The discipline of getting it, the things you learn, the people you meet - good stuff! No matter what 'type' of degree it is.

You failed to explain why its not useless. They are undecided... so they will be no more decided once they're done that degree but will have fewer options (i.e.: their degree is useless).

having your own business doesn't require a degree. and saying that a BA is useless hardly declares everyone here to be useless, unless we all have that degree and can't find good work.

They are not useless because they end up giving individuals exposure to, and then the ability to choose a career, in the humanities field that will result in a qualification.. BA (Journalism/Psychology/Anthropology etc.). I hope that gets across what I'm getting at.

If it does, and you disagree.. thats fine! We shall agree to disagree because its about 3million fucking degrees and i cbf'd.

I do plan on going to medical school afterwards so whatever degree I choose (even if it seems completely useless) will not matter.. I will get my phD

Oh by the way I'm heading towards becoming an ob/gyn.

Just focus your degree of study towards what you believe you wish to do...for you? Keep your Sciences on hand and look at a BS v. BA. Take classes whiich demonstrate your ability which prepare you to the future.

A heavy concentration is say "Art" will not assist you in getting into MD or a PhD area of study. Unless it's in Art & Science...

Keep going kiddo!

HUH?????

A GOOD nurse makes more then a VERY BAD lawyer....

Look at the career span; big difference.

I can wall paper my entire house with degrees; the point is what? It's how I choose to employ my talents which get me into a career and a decent paying job.

A State Trooper retires with more of a pension & higher paid salary than the majority of MD's...and think these guys barely have a degree nor do they have liability as a MD does.
