I'm the guy that installs your satellite dishes and gets on 40 foot ladders just to tighten the lug nut on your cable...

Meh, it's a good job just really rough hours.

OK, just to clarify, I'm in the "minor leagues" of the industry - I'm not sipping daquiries with Heidi Klum on a private beach in Hawaii or anything like that. It's all fairly local. And it involves a lot more than just taking pictures - I spend much more time talking on the phone and answering e-mails than doing the actual photography.

Not much of a story behind it, really. I never intended to get into this line of work - it was just a happy accident, honestly. A year and a half or so ago I sort of fell into the industry as a lot of my friends were models. And since I had a large apartment, a decent camera, and some basic knowledge of photography, lighting, etc., I helped some of them flesh out their portfolios as a favor. I also attended some industry parties with them just for fun. So I was kind of involved in the business for a long time before I actually got into it. Which again was by accident - I was looking to get some modeling jobs just to make some quick cash a few months ago, so I asked one of my friends to help and she suggested that I become a photographer instead and referred me to this agency as she had worked for them before and could recommend me. And that's the end of that story.

I'm by no means an expert (I've only been doing this for about a month), but as far as getting into this industry as a photographer: It's all about who you know. If you don't have any connections, you can pretty much forget about it. Good social skills are a must. The best advice I could give you is to know how to take a good picture, befriend a few models and offer to photograph them for free since you can both benefit from it, and let them introduce you to other people in the business. It's not something you can just jump right into...

All you need to get by in the world is money and nepotism.

I'm fresh in university but all the older students chime the same bell;
"Gotta network, gotta make connections, gotta get good marks."
But, wait a minute, look at today's doctors, the unenthusiastic, disgruntled practitioners that have that deadened glaze of discontent and hate for their life.

The difficult part of a career is getting in. Once in, you're set.
