I think that the term 'nervous breakdown' is a bit vague, and is used to cover a number of conditions. I would tend to think of it as a state where a person has difficulty doing everyday tasks due to an extreme emotional state. It might be caused by high levels of stress, depression, or other factors.

It is a handy but very imprecise term covering a person's impaired functioning in society by feeling overwhelmed. In most cases a bit of help with separating real from imaginary, important from unimportant and setting priorities will aid recovery. If there has been a true psychotic break (also imprecise) or a neurosis has gotten out of hand, some medication and "talk" help is indicated.
Wierd is likely a good way to describe it; usually gotten over. We all have minor episodes throughout our lives; some of us get overwhelmed by too much at one time.

I do hope you have encouraged him to seek help; impaired judgement and lack of logical thoughts are primarily described as scattered & irrational thoughts; flight of ideas. The loss of the ability to put one and one together to concluded it equates to two...etc.

If it's any comfort; A friend of mines mom believes the KGB is digging an underground tunnel to her house. She goes through episodes (when off her meds) where she calls the police to protect her...
