Mono? How long does it last?

How long does mono last if you do catch it? And I know it goes away by itself since theres no medicine or cure for it. Also, is mono similar to chicken pox? In a way where you only get it once in your life and then its not possible to catch it again?

Thanks a bunch to whoever answers!

Mononucleosis is known as the "kissing disease" and is a virus the origins of Mono is the EBV (Epstein-Barr Virus). There are few people out there who are deemed "carriers" they have no symptoms yet those they come in contact with come down with it. Other's contract it (seen in teens mainly) have symptoms and it passes without any difficulty. Some have no issue with it.

There is no "cure" you have to let it run it's course. The key is to get plenty of sleep and eat well. Meanwhile you have to watch for increased symptoms such as enlarged lymph-nodes, changes in blood counts, and you can have an enlarged spleen. Generally, the rest period is about 6 weeks (sorry). Lots of sleep, you are going to feel exhausted, do not try to beat it, it will just run you down more. There are the first few weeks where you are "contagious".

Mono most do not get a re-occurrence later in life since you have the antibodies. The similarity to Chicken Pox is that is also a virus. But with the C.Pox, if you are re-exposed later in life you get Shingles.

Many people come in contact with it any never have an active infection and develop antibodies...it's estimate that 90% of adults 30+ have the antibodies. Generally the lymph node involvement in the neck is the major sign with the fatigue. Lymph nodes almost feel as if they have stones in them! Keeping teens in the house for the period they need is the toughest, especially when the acute part is over, they feel better and want to get out, then feel really run down! Mainly it's seen at the age of 10+. I had one young girl who had strep and mono, + strep culture and positive mono-spot.

So you get mono once and then your body is immune to it later on in life?

You get it once (some are exposed and do not get symptoms yet develop the antibody since their immune system can fight it off) and you have antibodies which help prevent a re-occurrence. More or less, the answer is yes.
