If you get really good at it...if im not mistaken shoalin is more form based. With every technique flowing into the next.

You need to learn to hit them hard and fast when it comes to life. Not with form or technique but with brutal effieciency.

It is, and I agree with the last part. Knock 'em off balance and finish 'em.

I was thinking of taking up Wing Chun, since it's more straight forward and linear. But trying to find a trainer around these parts might be hard.

Im telling you...either Krav Maga or Judo...since most of the time fights due tend to turn into wrestling matches....one of the reasons I say Maga is because they teach the vital and most painful body parts, and how to defend against knives, handguns, blunt objects and swords....cuz hey you never know when king Arthur is gonna jump you.

a hit to the nose with the palm of your hand will break the nose. it will also blind the attacker for a short amount of time (5 mins or so).
if you then hit the attacker below the ribs but above the belly button with your fist it will make him short of breath and put his head down to the floor. then knee the attacker in the face and he will be out for the count so to speak.

the best defence thoguh is to avoid these types of situations altogether.

I love it when people give these hints. Reminds me of a 'Malcolm in the Middle' dialogue;
Guy; "Alright, remember that move I taught you?"
Francis: "Yeah."
Guy; "Don't even try it."

There aren't a lot of schools for Krav maga around these parts, Ducy, might go for judo.

Long time with no posts on this thread, but re-reading it, this reminded me something I learned about one of my martial arts instructors. A hugely skilled guy, trained since the age of 4 in Silat, for a while his "trick" was a strike he'd perfected. If you hit someone at just the right point in the abdomen, they vomit. Every time, without fail. For a while, it was how he ended his fights. And started them. Someone tried to pick a fight, he simply left them bent over vomiting. If they're likely to come back for more, they also get an elbow to the back of the neck, nice and efficient.

Apparently, the only reason he stopped doing it was because he got tired of cleaning vomit off his shoes.

And people wonder why I always laugh when they try to claim that martial arts have no real practical application.

Have you ever considered being a "defensive tactics" instructor? Much more ease in protecting yourself from an attacker using body force and weight to defend yourself...if that fails here is the lock & load...carry concealed, legally. Wonderful protective techniques for women & men...especially when single and alone. I do not condone violence; however, a single woman [or man] can use both to fend such attack preventing personal injury when attacked or life is in immediate danger, protecting their life.

In life someone breaking in to your home at 2 am with an alarm system going off is not looking for a cup of coffee or to chat. The intruder who enters with an monitored alarm will flee [ 3 seconds] or carry though their intent. They make their choice...I am not about to question what they want. It's been said ""I'd rather be tried by 12 then carried by six".
