It's always interesting to read threads and see how in a matter of days the original thread has been manipulated through various posts. We went from tactile methods of prtoecting oneself to what kinds of guns we own and where we keep them to Crocodile Dundee to war politics. It's kind of like that game called "telephone" where many people sit in a circle and the first person whispers something random into the ear of the next person and then he/she has to whisper what they heard into the ear of the next person and so on until it gets to the last person and they have to say aloud what they heard and it's always something COMPLETELY different than the original sentence.

yes well as this forum generally just discusses sex matters i suppose there is little room for other topics so these views come out in other threads, mind you nobody seems to have any more tips on self defense to add so we just drifted around

Just as a post on the original topic...
If you're attacked, and cannot run away (I suggest running whenever possible) attacks to a man's genitals do more to anger him than anything else. Sure, they may drop him to the floor, but he will get up again. Eye gouges are something no-one gets up from. Never underestimate the power of jabbing your thumb into a would-be-attacker's eye. It's almost guaranteed to send someone running. |

Great info there.
We (civillians) don't carry guns in Aus but still it pays to be prepared. My MIL has been robbed of her handbag 2x in just as many months. |

Krav maga is possibly the best for self defense...its offered in tons of places and everyone uses it from cops to military officials to even body guards....in my years of practicing, some of the best points: Genitals, eyes, throat and sternum....xanthion although a lot of people can get up after a swift kick to the gonads, it can buy you precious time to either run, or aim for the eyes and throat...and if you can hit him hard enough, you could ask him to bite the curb while you proceed to stomp all over him

Oh, no doubt. It can be fantastically efficient. If you've got the strength, it's a good idea to slam their nose into your shoulder when you do it.
However, I prefer attacks to the groin to be either stomps (Ouch) or rips (Really ouch). The main reason is because it has the potential to turn the predator-prey dynamic around. When you're attacked, the attacker is the predator. He expects pain, it's part of being the predator. The key to turning it around is moving beyond pain. You need to go for permanent damage. Which is what makes the eyes fantastic. Men take hits to the testicles far more than nature must have intended. All physical sports carry with them the potential for pain to the genitals. It's a risk you get used to. And yes, it hurts. But it usually causes no long lasting damage. However, someone trying to jab something into my eyes is a new experience for me. It's something that's hard to recover from, and puts you very much on the defensive. Tear, bite off, gouge out whatever you can. If they can't grow it back, or heal with time, the prospect of losing it is terrifying. EDIT: as to the martial arts - I'm not familiar with Krav maga, but it sounds similar to the martial art I study, which is Kupso. Kupso's more or less localised to Scotland (But not a traditional Scottish martial art :P). It's used by bouncers/security guards a lot (In fact, both the instructors work as bouncers at my Student's Union). Has a lot of focus on real life situations, as opposed to the predominantly "form over function" tournament martial arts. Last edited by Xanthion; 08-20-2007 at 07:49 AM.. |

Yeah i agree with you whole heartedly xanthion....go for the eys but only if you can do it without seriously endangering yourself...leaving yourself wide open for a counter when you go for their eyes...thats the beauty of legs...got almost twice the reach of an arm...and dont take things like TKD or jujitsu for self defense since its too rule based.

I'm going to a Shaolin based school of Kung Fu. How are they for practicality?

Protecting onself
My wife and I both are aware of our surroundings everytime we go anywhere. We also protect ourselves, me with a .45 caliber Glock and my wife carries a .38 special S&W, and yes we both have a CCW license. Our state recently passed a law that says we have a right to use deadly force anywhere we have a right to be, to protect ourselves from rape, great bodily harm and the threat of death. The crime rate has dropped dramatically since the new law was passed.
Remember: GUNS DO NOT KILL PEOPLE, PEOPLE KILL PEOPLE!!! |
