they might well have and how very marvelous sit there and let the japanese destroy most of your navy hm a very tactful move I can't see any advantage in letting it happen the war was over 60 years ago now so they would have told us the truth by now if there was some sublime reason to act like idiots and ignore it

uhh..whether they allowed it to happen or not America still kicked Japan's ass anyway. "careful planning and precise accuracy" sure as hell didn't stop the atom bomb. i'd pretty much call that being overpowered by brute strength

The atom bomb needed a lot of precision and accuracy to be built.
But, you got a point, never undervalue brute strength.

the key difference between the bomb and pearl harbor being: the success of pearl harbor did not help Japan win the war :|

in fact the film TORA TORA TORA closes with the japanese navy head (forget his rank) saying to his men and later in his own mind "all we have done is awaken a giant and fill him with a terrible resolve"

I'm not disputing the fact that pearl harbor did not do much but that considering the countries two totally different sizes what japan accomplished was quite remarkable as futile as it was in the whole outcome of the war but fact is that America with a head swelled with its power did not seriously take the possibility of attack and perhaps thought that its mere size was enough to deter attack in fact that was my original point japan knew that in view of the difference in actual combat power/size it was futile to "invade" America it would be like putting a needle in and elephant.
