If they are around it's safe to know how to properly handle one then to live in fear of them! Plus shooting for fun is a great hobby to do together!

Oh, Yes--then there is the stun-gun. This is fine if you have come into contact with the bad guy, otherwise, see, above.
I got a Derringer D-22. 2 shot .22. I wouldn't use it as a defense weapon, besides the fact that it's only a .22. The trigger is super difficult to pull, it is not as accurate, plus, the way the Derringer is made it's easy to shoot your hand when loading. However, a small frame Taurus in .357 is great.

No, I grew up and realized it's silly to bring a knife to a gun fight.

Usually that just has people upping the ante.
Like the NRA; "With legalizing uzis, you can now defend you and your family from up to 70 thieves at once."
Or the gun can be stolen, sold on the black market, you could accidently shoot a family member, etc, you're kids putting their grubby fingers all over it.

ALL firearms should be banned and outlawed that would reduce the problem

well lets start by simply issuing no more firearms and licences and retracting all weapons legally possessed now that only leaves the illegal ones to dispose of its quite simple if we forget the ah but what if, obviously they will always exist and be used illegally but aren't they already ? cmon tell me how many people really fend off an aggressor with a firearm bit difficult when that legally owned gun is already pointed at your head.....

Then people will start buying them off the blackmarket.
You can take away the firearms, but that's just going to leave the desire for people to defend themselves. And people will go to extremes to ensure their loved ones are safe.
