On Sex and Smoking

I take an oral contraceptive, but because I smoke, it's statistically less effective. Since I'm not really willing to gamble on potential pregnancy, I'm not comfortable having sex without a condom - it seems like a ****ty bet to lose. My boyfriend wants me to quite smoking, so that I'll be comfortable having sex without a condom (we've both been tested for STDs and everything). I can't really defend my cancer causing habit, but honestly, I don't WANT to quit smoking - I quite enjoy it, addiction tho it may be. He thinks I should quit for the sake of our sex life, which I don't think is totally fair. We still have awesome sex, and he's always known I smoked, so why should I have to quit now?

If anybody has any thoughts or opinions, I'd love to hear them.....

My girl smokes & when she was on the pill we had sex all the time without a condom.
I've never ever heard that smoking reduces the effects of the pill.

Don't even try until you are ready to quit; otherwise, you have to want to quit! I quit for other's just to go back...

From what I have read, smoking doesn't decrease the effectiveness of the pill.
It is advised that you don't smoke while on the pill (like the commercials say... especially women over 35) because the pill can be linked to heart disease etc.... I was just reading on another board and they were talking about how this was REALLY bad when women took the old school BCP that had high doses of hormones... which mine now is a low dose and I think most are.
Anyhow... it was saying that chances increase if you are a heaving smoker which was 25+ cigs a day.
But in non and light smokers.. the increase wasn't as bad. I am a moderate smoker I guess... I smoke probably a half a pack a day... thats it. If I am at home doing nothing... then I might only smoke like 5 a day.

This link says that it "might" but no studies have been done to prove it

I can give you a thousand reasons to quit smoking and I do to my patients. Those who want to quit do and the others simply continue to smoke. Among those thousand reasons is NOT that smoking reduces the effectiveness of the pill. Some small sample studies have found that, but other small studies have found that there is no difference.

Reduced effectiveness of the pill is not a reason to stop smoking and smoking is no reason to use a condom. Whether or not you smoke, among 100 women on the pill, alone, three will become pregnant in a year. Of course, adding a condom reduces that even further. Taken to the extreme, the pill, plus an iud, plus diaphragm, plus jelly, plus a female condom and a condom will really reduce your chances of pregnancy, especially if you have him withdraw.

The point: decide what level of risk (or protection) you are comfortable with. Women in stable, monogamous relationships and on the pill rarely add any other protection unless they are temporarily on some interacting medication.

And Demon is quite correct about those old-fashioned estrogen bombs women took. Today's pills are one-quarter to one-eighth the dose of the original pills, ca 1960.

Got any idea what lung cancer does to a person?
If you love smoking so much, cut down and switch to a pipe (tobacco, no drugs, I despise drugs). It is not as harmful as those cancer sticks.

Here are my personal reasons for not wanting to be around a person who smokes:

* Hair smells bad
* Breath is stale and smells fowl as s/he talks to me
* Clothes smell bad
* Car smells of smoke
* Closet smells of smoke
* House smells of smoke

I can't imagine kissing someone who smokes even if they have recently brushed their teeth and gargled. Being in a car with a smoker or their home contaminates my hair and clothes and makes my skin feel oily. Yuck.

* Depending upon the wind, the smoke from the car ahead with an open window drifts back to the inside of my car!

On rare occasion, I have even smelled a person from across a crowded room who has just walked into a room from outside. These individuals exude the chemicals of smoking from the pores of their skin which seems to preceed them as they walk.

* Depending upon the breeze, the smoke from a passerby standing several yards away invades "my space", much to the dismay of my nostrils. This is disconcerting and annoying enough, now think about how we pass germs around even without smoke in the air. That is enough for me to want to close my windows and never go outdoors. {I wonder if I can telecommute?)

Life without dancing?
I don't think so......

The feet may learn the steps;
yet only the spirit can dance!

Dancing is the fastest way to get
a girl alone and into your arms in public.

The Tango smolders and burns. It ignites the
heart, the soul, and yes, the libido.

Life is not about waiting for the storm to pass,
it's about learning how to Dance in the Rain!

Dance as if nobody is watching.

i understand you'r problem - im the same, smoking itself reduces fertility in men up to 80% and in women about 50% avarage, so i doubt you'd get pregnant
