Too many people deal with situations just like this one.  Mine falls somewhere between the author and her partner.  But what struck me most was the partner's sister's reaction.  A great many lesbian, gay, and bisexual people are some of the worst homophobes around.  

Society has made them so self-loathing that they violently condemn other people who are gay, lesbian, or bisexual.  The very people who, by being open and honest about themselves, make life easier on everyone.  Sadly, these "gay homophobes" are also the ones driven to depression and suicide.  

What a great choice some people are offered.  "Lie or Lose?"
